FENCE-POST WITH APPLIED HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,780, dated December 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SGHOFIELD, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fence-Posts with Applied Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to metal fence-post's with applied holders of tubular construction; and it consists in a novel construction and combination of said parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

One object of the invention is to provide an effective, cheap, and durable holder for iron fence and other like posts.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents an outside view, in elevation, of the fence-post holder with the post in part secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, mainly upon the line 2 2 in Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section upon the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.

The holder A, which is the main part exposed to or which comes in contact with the ground, it being buried or entered therein, is preferably made of earthenware or other like comparatively-indestructible material. It is of tubular construction throughout its length or height, being open both above and below, and is of cylindrical shape in transverse section, and may therefore be manufactured much cheaper than if of polygonal configuration in transverse section. The bottom of said holder may be made either with or without a base-flange b, projecting from it on all sides, but preferably with such a flange to give a broad bearing-surface, which will prevent the post-holder from being raised by frost in the ground or from any ordinary force applied to lift it, and which provides for the firm anchoring of it.

A post and holder therefor constructed as described will be found very serviceable, es-

pecially in the case of corner or end posts of wire fences and on which the pull or strain comes when tightening up the wires of the fence.

Having thus'fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the tubular base or holder, of the post having its two part lower end within the base or holder and the extremities thereof projecting outward in opposite directions under the lower edge of the said base or holder, as at e, substantially as set forth.

In a fence-post and holder, the combination of a tubular post-holder, substantially as described, and a metal post composed of an upright bar and angling strut or brace secured or bolted together above the holder and arranged to run down opposite sides of the interior of the holder, with their lower ends lower bearings of the post, essentially as set forth.
