SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,480, dated December 6, 1892.

Application filed September 13, 1892. Serial No. 445,768. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J AKOB GRAFF, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing in Pater son, county of Passaic, and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in lockets serving as a perpetual calendar; and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the locket and the calendar-operating mechanism, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved locket, the two sections of the same being opened to fully illustrate the construction of the operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, showing the exterior of the.

locket; and Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the latter when closed.

In said drawings, or represents the locket, consisting of the two sections 1) and a, hinged together at d in the usual manner. To one of said sections is pivotally secured a yoke e, by means of which the locket can be secured to a watch-chain, as will be manifest. The section 1) consists of the rim f and the bottom g, to which latter is pivotally secured a pin it, on which again is secured a toothed wheel '5, adapted to be operated by pawl 7c. The latter is pivoted to a lever m, fulcrumed with one end at n to the bottom g and extending with the free end through a slot 0 of ring f. The pawl 7c is provided with an extension 10, against which rests the free end of spring q. The return motion of wheel 5 is prevented by a pawl '1", controlled by spring .9. The bottom g is provided on its outside with the numbers from 1 to 31, representing the days of a month.

Secured to the pin h and resting on the bottom is arranged a dial or disk if, provided with a slot u of a size sufficient to expose seven of the numbers (on the bottom) at one time. Said dial has engraved or printed thereon the names of the days of the week.

The section 0 is of similar construction to the section b, with the difference that the bottom 1) is divided into twelve sections, and each section is provided with the name of the month it represents. If desired, the time of sunset and sunrise and also the average length of a day and night for each month, can be indicated in each section. The dial of section a is also provided with a slot 10, of a size sufficient to expose the name and figures relating to one month at one time. Each section is operated independently of the other by moving the extending portion of its respective lever on to and fro in the slot of the rim, thus moving the dials into the desired positions.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A locket consisting of two sections, each of said sections being provided with a movable dial, again provided with-a slot, a pin to which said dial is pivotally secured, a ratchet arranged on said pin and operated by a pawl, the latter being controlled by a spring, a lever operating said pawl, and means for controlling the said ratchet, all said parts being arranged and combined to operate substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. A locket combining therein two sections, each section consisting of a ring, a bottom secured to said ring and provided in one section with the numerals corresponding to the number of the days in a month, in the other section with the names of the months, a dial or disk arranged on said bottom and provided with a slot, said slot in one section being of a size sufficient to expose seven numerals, in the other section of a size sufficient to expose one name at a time, and means for operating each dial independently of the other, all said parts substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

3. A locket combining therein two sections,

each section consisting of a ring, a bottom secured to said ring and provided in one section with the numerals corresponding to the number of days in a month, in the other section with the names of the months, a dial or disk arranged on said bottom and provided pawl, and means for controlling the ratchet, with a slot, said slot in one section being of a all said parts substantially as described, and size sufficient to expose seven numerals,in the for the purposes set forth.
