AUTOMATIC FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.487,384, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, AARON A. BELLEAU, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented an Improved Automatic Faucet, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a faucet for filling smaller barrels or other receptacles from a main tank and which is so constructed that when the barrel is full the faucet will be closed and its discharge-nozzle will be raised out of the barrel.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of my improved faucet, showing it lowered; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same, showing it raised; Fig. 3, a top view of the operating mechanism; Fig. 4, a section on line or 00, Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a section on line y y, Fig. 3; Fig. 6, a rear view of Fig. 3; Fig. 7, a section similar to Fig. at, showing the parts in a different position.
The letter a represents the inlet-pipe, con nected with a suitable main delivery-tank. This pipe is provided with acock a, through which the liquid flows into a horizontal slotted tubular bearing a Upon this bearing there is free to revolve aslotted sleeve 19, connected at one side with the discharge-pipe b and at the other side with a lever 19 which is weighted, as at 19 The discharge-pipe b is provided with a nozzle b, that enters the barrel or other receptacle A to be filled. The nozzle b is provided with a longitudinal partition b to form two chambers. One of these chambers constitutes the nozzle proper through which the liquid is discharged. \Vithin the other chamber is placed a float a, connected by bell-crank c and suitable rod 0 to a catch 0 pivoted to the tube 1). This catch is adapted to engage a hook at of a fixed bracket d, that is also provided with a bearing at for the tube.
As so far described the apparatus operates as follows: The liquid flowing through the tube a, cook a, and hollow bearing a enters pipe b and through nozzle 1) is discharged into the barrel A. During this operation the tube b is in its horizontal position, resting upon bearing 01 and held down by the engagement of the hooks d, Fig. 1. The teeth 6' are engaged by a toothed segment g, pivoted to the weighted arm b When the pipe I) is lowered, the segment g is raised until the pipe 19 has arrived at nearly its lowermost position, when a rearwardly-extending arm g of segment Q will strike against a fixed stop (1 on the bracket This will cause the segment g to revolve on its pivot and to thus cause a revolution of segment 6. This segment, intergearing with segmentfon the cock-spindle, will thus open the cock. It will be seen that the above-described mechanism will open the cock suddenly as the nozzle b is dipped into the barrel A in contradistinction of causing an objectionable gradual opening of the cock during the entire downward motion of pipe Z). WVhen the barrel A has been filled and the pipe I) is raised out of the same by the disengagement of the hooks d c in the manner described, it will take the segment e with it. This is accomplished by means of a shoulder e on the segment 6, that engages a corner I1 on the sleeve b during the upward motion of pipe I), Fig. 4, but not during the downward motion, Fig. 7. The segment a, being thus revolved backward, will revolve segment f to close the cock 0.. volve segment g; but this will merely cause a revolution of the segment 9 upon its pivot without producing any effect upon the cock.
In order to permit the cock to be opened and closed by hand, if desired, the shoulder 6 may be provided with a handle 6 By manipulating this handle the barrel A may be filled when it is desired not to have the upward and downward motion of pipe b.
The operation of the apparatus will be read ily understood. The pipe I) being lowered by At the same time the segment 6 will re- 7 hand, so that its nozzle enters the barrel, the cook a will be opened and the liquid will flow into the barrel until the latter is filled. Then the float will be raised, the pipe will be tilted, so that its nozzle is withdrawn from the barrel, and the cock will be closed.
What I claim is 1. The combination of an inlet-pipe With a cook, a pivoted weighted outlet-pipe having a nozzle and a catch, a hook engaging the catch for holding the pivoted pipe in its lowermost position, and with a float within the nozzle connected to the catch, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of an inlet-pipe with a cook, a pivoted outlet-pipe having a nozzle and a catch,a float, atoothed segmentfnpon the cock-spindle, and a toothed segment 6,

3. The combination of an inlet-pipe Witha cook, a pivoted outlet-pipe having a nozzle and a catch, a float, a loosely-turning toothed segment e, having teeth 6' c and Witha fixed segment f upon the cock-spindle, and a pivoted segment g, adapted to engage segment 6, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of an inlet-pipe with a cook, a pivoted outlet-pipe having a nozzle and a catch, a float, intergeared segments e f g, and with a stop 01 and catch d substantially as specified.
5. The combination of an inlet-pipe witha cock, an outlet-pipe, a double-toothed segment 6, free to turn in one direction, a toothed segment f, fast on the cock-spindle and engaging segment 6, and with a pivoted segment g, also engaging segment e, substantially as specified.
