ISAAC STEPHENSON, OF MARINETTE, WISCONSIN.

IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,736, dated July 11,1865.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, I. STEPHENSON, of Marinette, in the county of Oconto and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Slei'ghs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the marks and letters thereon.

My improvementis upon that class ofsleighs having divided runners, or the running gear made up of two or more sections,'such sleighs being regarded as better adapted for use when,

by reason of the drifting of the snow or from other causes, the snow track or road has become uneven and irregular.

My improvement may be applied either to pleasure or draft sleighs, to stage -sleighs, or any other kind of sleighs, and the several and various parts thereof may be made of any material commonly used in the construction of sleighs.

The drawings forming part of this specification show my invention applied to the boxsleigh, Figure 1, letter A, thereof being a side view of the sleigh; Fig. 2, letter B, being also a side view of the sleigh with therunners shown in the condition or position they will assume when in a depressed or concave portion of the track; Fig. 3, 0, being a side view showing the position of the inside runner of the sleigh when passing on or over an elevated or convex portion of the track; Fig. 4, D, being a section of the forward runners; Fig. 5, E, be-

ing a section of the back runners, and the several figures on the remaining sheet of the drawings being views of detached parts of the gearing of the sleigh.

In each of these views, where like parts are shown, like letters and marks are used to indicate the parts.

It will be seen that the forward and the back set of runners are hinged to each other, the

hinge being very fully and clearly'shown on one of the sheets of the drawings, with ample explanatory notes written thereon.

It will also be seen that the front set of runners is attached or connected to the body or box of the sleigh by an eyebolt-hinge affixed to the beam and holster, and that the rear or back set of runners is connected to the box of the sleigh by guidebars attached to the bottom of the box, and by traversing-pieces attached to the bolster.

Friction-rollers maybe attached to the traversing-pieces, and coiled or other springs may be interposed between the ends of the guidebars and the traversing-pieces,so that in some instances the movements of the gear may be smoother and easier and less noisy than if the gear be used without such rollers, either aloneor in connection with springs.

The arrangement ,and construction of the parts herein referred to will give to the sleigh an easy and safe movement over the uneven and irregular snow-track, and the sleigh will not be as liable to be broken or injured as it would be without such construction and arrangement.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an improvement on sleighs having divided runners, is-

. 1. Hinging the ends of the runners to each other, substantially as herein set forth and shown.

2. The guide-bars and traversing-pieces, constructed and operated as herein recited and vshown, in combination with the hinging of the runners to each other, as herein described.
