Be it known that I, LUCEAN B. Stran- Luv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders, of which the following isia specification.
My invention relates to fendersfor rail The invention further aims to provide a" fender structure in which the fender blades or shoes are so positioned relatively to the wheels of the car'as to engage the track or rail directly in advance thereof. a v
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the follow- 111g specification and then more particularly pointed out in the'claim which 1s appended hereto and forms apartof this application In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denotelike or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

pin in turn supporting the plate or shoe 4; in the desired manner. The respective pins 7 act as a fulcrum for the respective shoes or plates; V I I A rod 8 is pivoted as at 9 to'each shoe 4 at its rear end'or extremity, the said rod fitting a bifurcation or recess 10 therefor. The opposite end of each rod 8 is pivoted as at ll, to 'a second rod 12 fulcrumed intermediate its ends as at 13, the plate 5 sup-, portingthe pin 14; which acts as the fulcrum' medium. The opposite end ofrod 12 is fafs- I tened as at 15 to a transverse rod 16 'ar ranged beneath the body of the car 1, the said rod 16 being actuatable to provide for simultaneous movement of the respective shoesorplates. Said rod 16 is bodily movable to actuate the respective rods 12 by means of a lever 17 fulcrumed 'equi distant its ends as at 18 andfastened as at 19 at its opposite end to an operating rod 20. A bracket 21 is secured to the under side of the car body 1 to serve as a support means for the lever 17. The rod 20 is connected at its opposite end, that is, at a point remote from its connecting point 19, to anarm21fulcrumed intermediate'its ends as at 22 and actuatable upon its fulcrum point by means of a rod 23 in turn connected to a link 24 directly engaging a crank device 25 positioned forwardly of the car I and in such adjacency to the control means therefor as to be operated by the motorman or engineer as the case may be.

' the event of the car coming in contact thereire with the accompanying drawings it will be noted that the rails 2 may be quickly and effectually cleared; that the two fender shoes or plates are simultaneously movable through actuation of a single operating element; and that the entire device may be operatively associated with a car or the like without modifying the structure of the latter to a material extent.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated parts may be resorted to, when required,
without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined 1n the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my inven v tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
In a fender attachment for railway cars, a pair of fender plates positioned forwardly of the front wheels of the car, a support for each plate affixed to the car truck, a rod fulcrumed intermediate its ends, a rod extending transversely of the car and secured to thefirst mentioned-rod, a' fulcrumed rod secured to said support, the last mentioned rod having connection with the transverse rod, a rod connecting each of the last mentioned fulcrumed rods with the fender plates, and means connected to the first mentioned fulcrum rod and actuatable to simultaneously move the fender plates either into or out of engagement with the railway rails.
