ASH-SIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,350, dated December 6, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEVI PELLICAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South borough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Ash-Sifter, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification snfficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.

The objects of my present invention are, first, to provide an ash-siftin g mechanism that will be convenient of operation and having facilities for confining the dust within its interior; second, to provide an ash-sitter having an exterior casing and an interior chest that can be removed and used as an ash-receptacle in the household; third, to provide an ash-Sifter mechanism having a base adapted for covering the barrel or ashes-receptacle and provided with adjustable fastenings for securing it in place thereon. I attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the exterior of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the casing and inner chest as opened. Fig 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section at position of line :0 m with the inner chest removed. Fig. 5 shows the interlocking plate and end of the shaker-rod, and Fig. 6 is a bottom perspective view of the removable bottom for the chest.

My improved ash-sitter consists of an outer casing or box A, having oppositely-inclined bottom pieces a with an opening or dropway G between the two inclines, and provided with a cover A, preferably hinged to the side of the case and fitted with suitable means for securing the cover closed. An open-centered base-board C, of a size suitable to cover a barrel or other receptacle B, connects with the bottom of the case A by means of buttons 0. Said base is provided with adjustable hooks b and set-screws 1), whereby it can be firmly secured to the receptacle B by drawing the hooks outward by their downwardlyturned outer ends to force their points against the inner surface of the barrel and there retaining them by the screws. The top of the base is best made inclined,as at 0 so as to discharge rain when used out of doors. The top of the case may also be inclined for the same purpose. Within the case there is an endwise-movable carrier or supporting-frame D, of rectangular shape, mounted to travel back and forth and supported on ledges m along the side of the case. Antifriction-rollers e are best arranged thereon to render the movement easy and non-wearing. The frame D has an open center, and hinged to its respective end pieces D there are two swinging plates or scrapers E, that incline inward and downward and rest upon the inclined bottom pieces Ct of the case. The ends of the plates E nearly meet each other when at central positions and are rounded or beveled off to a thin edge at their ends. The width of said plates fills the space between the ledges m as closely as may be while permitting freedom of action.

Upon the-end of the carrier-frame there is fixed a connecting-plate 3, with which the end it of the shaker or handle H can be interlocked when introduced through a small opening in the end of the case inserted therein and given a half-turn, as shown. A removable box or chest F, having an opening 4 in its bottom, rests upon the carrier-frame D and is retained by the shoulders or end ribs D from sliding thereon when shaken. Said chest is provided with a close-fitting hinged coverf and means for fastening the same when closed. A pair of loops 5 may be fixed on the top of the chest for retention and storage of the shaker-handle H when not in use. (See dotted lines, Fig. 3.) A sieve-box 1, consisting of a rectangular body with a wire-netting bottom I, is fitted within the chest F, filling the interior thereof and provided with handles t, by which it can be lifted into and from the same. The sieve-box I is best flanged on its edges to overlap the joints at the edges of the chest for making close connection and preventing the ashes from entering between the sides. An auxiliary removable bottom J is provided for the chest for closing the space 4 to facilitate the use of the chest as a house ash-deposit, as hereinafter explained.

The operation is as follows: The ashes or material to be sifted is put into the sitter I and the sitter placed within the chest F,which is then closed and the coverf secured. The handle-rod H is inserted through the opening in the case and its end It engaged with the plate 3. The chest being in place on the carrier-frame D, the cover of the casing A is closed and secured. Agitation of the carrier and theinner chest and sifter supported thereon is then effected by reciprocative action of the handle-rod H. As the back-and-forth movement of the carrier proceeds its hinged plates E alternately move down the inclined bottom pieces a and protrude through the opening G, forcing and delivering the ashes that fall from the sifter down through said opening, thus preventing clogging of the passage. The dust is entirely confined by the two inclosing cases A and F, so that the operation of sifting ashes can be performed without litter and annoyance. In any instance or when desired the chest F can be removed from the case A, its auxiliary removable bottom J introduced therein, and together with the sifter I can then be carried into the house and placed near the stove and used as a receptacle for the ashes until filled, then carried out to the barrel or receptacle B and case A, the sifter I lifted out, and the auxiliary bottom removed, the sifter replaced, the chest introduced to the casing A, and the sifting operation performed as above specified, thus providing a neat and convenient apparatus for situations where the sifting is to be done out of doors, as the blowing about of the ashes by the wind is prevented by their conveyance within the closed chest F. In situations Where ashes are deposited in chutesas for city apartments or fiatsthe mouth of the chute would occupy the position herein indicated by the barrel or receptacle B, and the connection of the casing A thereto could be made permanent instead of temporary.

I claim as my invention herein, to be secured by Letters Patent 1. The combination,as described,of the exterior chest having the inclined bottom and the closing cover, the inner chest having the inclined open bottom and the closing cover and movably fitting within said exterior chest, a reciprocating carrier whereon said inner chest is supported, and the removable sifterbox fitting within said inner chest, all substantially as set forth.

2. The ash-sifter comprising the outer casing having a closing cover and a base adapted for covering a barrel or receptacle, the closable inner'box or chest having the hinged cover and the auxiliary removable bottom, and a removable Sifter-box with netting bottom arranged within said inner chest, said inner chest being removable, together with the sitter-box, from the outer casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the exterior case having the double inclined bottom and top cover, the inner chestand sitter fitted therein, and the movable carrier-frame supporting said chest and provided with the oppositelydirected hinged delivery-plates, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the outer casing having interior side ledges, the inner chest having the sitter-box arranged therein, the movable carrier or frame for supporting said inner chest, provided with shoulders for retaining the same thereon and having a perforated catch-plate fixed on its end, and the detachable handle, the end of its rod fitted with a T- head adapted for entering through a hole in the outer casing and engaging by a half-turn with said perforated catch-plate, substantially as set forth. 1

5. In combination with the base-plate having the outer casing, the inner chest and sifter mechanism mounted thereon, the means for attaching the apparatus to a barrel or ash-receptacle, consisting of the adjustable Wire hooks b, fitted to slide longitudinally in grooves or guideways formed in said bedplate and having downwardly-turned outer ends 12 and set-screws b for retaining said hooks at position of adjustment, as set forth.
