HAY-RACK FOR FARM-WAGONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,333, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that I, AARON MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks for Farm-Wagons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention'relates to racks for use on wagons, its object being to provide a rack that can be adjusted for use for any purpose in which a rack or wagon-box is needed; and it consists in the adjustment,arrangement,and combination of its parts.

Figure 1 is aperspective View of my rack. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the hinge. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the adj usting mechanism. Fig. 4 is an end view of the rack, and Fig. 5 a view of the side bracket.

In the drawings, A is the box having the side pieces A and the end pieces 0 O mortised into the side-boards.

B B are the slatted adj usting-wings hinged to the box by the hinge 3 4 and having the adjusting supporting-rods G G G depending therefrom and fitting into the sphere F F F containing the eccentrics 1 2. These spheres have an extension whereby they may be pivoted to the removable side brackets H on the side pieces A of the box by the pivot F and contain a central groove for receiving the rods G G G and side openings to the groove for receiving two opposite eccentrics or cams 1 and 2, which are so pivoted as to act upon the rod G, one 1 to hold it up and the other 2 to hold it down, as shown in Fig. 3. The side pieces A on the box A are provided with an upwardly-projecting lug a for engaging a corresponding slot in the lower end of the removable side brackets II H H, the said lug and slot adapted to hold the lower end of the bracket H against the box, the upper end being secured by a bolt.

The wing-hinge is a separable two part hinge. I do not wish tobe confined to the hinge illustrated, and any common two-part hinge capable of easy separation can be used. As previously stated, the wings B B are slatted; but when used in drawing grain I fix a board B between the inner slats, so as to make a closed win g and save the shelled grain,which will thereby roll into the box A.

5 5 5 are small flat cams pivoted to the slats and adapted to turn over the inserting-board B and hold it in position.

D is a front guide-post or line rack secured to the inside of the boxon the rod E and can be turned down into the bottom of the box when not needed.

It is obvious that the wings can be adjusted to any angle or to the perpendicular, as shown in Fig. 4, or they may both be removed, the construction of the hinge allowing that to be quickly done, and by removing the bolt S at the top of the side brackets they, with the sphere, can be easily removed and the box then used for ordinary farm purposes. With the wings replaced it can be used as a hay-rack, a grain-rack, a W0od-raok, or for marketingbags of grain or produce.

I do not wish to confine myself to any special form of construction of the parts, and therefore any change may be made that is within the ordinary mechanical skill departing not from the principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and de ire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an adjustable rack for farm-wagons, the combination, with a box having side pieces A, provided with a lug a, of removable hinged wings B B, cams 5 5 for securing a removable board in the wings B B, depending supporting-rods G G G, removable supporting-rodadjusting mechanism F, 1, and 2, and removable side brackets 11 H H, substantially as specified.

2. In an adjustable wagon-rack, the adj usting mechanism consisting of the sphere-F, pivoted to the side of the Wagon-box and having a perpendicular central groove for receiving the supporting-rod G, said groove having two side openings for receiving the eccentrics 1 and 2, and the opposite eccentrics 1 and 2,

3. In an adjustable wagon-rack, the combi- 5 nation, with the box A and removable linerack D, of the wings B B, hinged to the top edge of the he sepa able hinges 3 end at,

supporting-rods G G G, depending from the wings B B, the sphere F F F, ficentrics 1 and 10 2 Within the sphere and operating on the rods G G G to hold them in the desired position, and removable side brackets H H H, removably secured to the side of the box, substantially as described.
