PACKING.
$PEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,260, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed February 19, 1892. Serial N0.4=Z2,07l. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT G. FERGUSON, of Lakewood, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanyingdrawingsl have shown it applied to packing the stem of an ordinary hand steam-valve.
Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 00 as of Fig. 1.
a is the cover to the valve-chamber, into which extends the valve-stem l),provided with a screw-thread b of ordinary construction.
0 is the packing-chamber surrounding the valve-stem b. d is the cap to this chamber, provided with a central opening for the passage of the valve-stem and screw-threaded to the valve-chamber cover a. Through one side of this cap, near the top, is bored a hole (1.
e is the packing material, which is preferably the ordinary wicking.
In packing the chamber 0 I proceed as follows: I unscrew the cap d and raise it up onto the stem 1) so that it may be turned without engaging with the screw-thread. I then pass one end of ordinary fibrous packing material through the opening 61' and fix it upon the stem 1) while I turn the cap d. This turning of the cap cl causes the packing material to wind around the stem 1), being drawn in through the opening (1. In this manner any quantity that may be desired of packing material may be coiled inside of the cap around the stem 1), and by reason of the fact that the opening d is near the top of the cap the tendency will be for the packing to accumulate principally at the top of the cap. I next bring the cap down into position to engage with the screw-thread and screw it down firmly upon the packing material. By the means described the packing material is readilyintroduced in such manner as to be most efficient.
Although I have shown the application of thisinvention to the packing of one character of joint, I do not Wish to be limited thereto, since, the principle being known, its applica tion to an indefinite variety of joints will be obvious.
I claim 1. In combination, a rod orstem, a bearing for the same, and a member whereby the packing between said rod or stem and said bearing is held in place, said member being provided withapacking-chamber and an opening thereinto adapted to admit of the entrance of the packing material as the same is wound around said rod or stem by the rotation on said rod or stem of said member, substantially as described.
2. As a means for applying packing material to a rod or stem and the bearing thereof, in combination with the rod or stem and bearing, a rotatable member surrounding said rod or stem provided with an opening adapted to admit of the entrance of the packing material as the same is Wound around the rod or stem by the rotation thereon of said member, and means whereby said member is secured to said bearing, substantially as described.
