FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,208, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed May 26, 1892- Serial No. 434,458. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, WILLIAM ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Delphos, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto IO which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fences.

The object of the invention is to provide a fence which shall be strong and easily constructed and in which the posts will clamp the rails and exert sufficient tension thereon to retain them in place, said tension being maintained by a rider, which is mounted on and secured to the posts above the top crotch thereof.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is an end view.

A and A designate the stakes or posts, which rest upon, or are driven in the ground to cross each other near their upper ends and form a crotch or angle.

B designates a short post, which lies parallel with the post A and is secured thereto, near its lower end, by a suitable wire or loop a, while its upper end lies within the lower crotch and abuts against the post A, where it is secured by a wire loop or band I).

The rails O of the fence are placed between the posts A and B, being arranged one above the other, as shown, and after being properly placed the top rail or riderD is located in the top notch at an angle therewith and its opposite end swung toward the adjacent posts, this top rider thus forming a lever, which spreads the upper ends of the postsA and A above the point where they cross each other and draws the lower portions together, which movement presses the short post B, which is located between the posts A and A, against the post A. The rider when it has been thus used as a lever to clamp the rails between the posts is secured against movement by a wire band or loop a, which passes over the rider and around the posts.

A fence thus constructed is simple, cheap, and durable, and the Weight of the rider, instead of having a tendency to separate the posts and loosen the fence, acts to clamp the rails more securely in place.

I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to construct a rai1-andrider fence by employing two posts which cross each other and support the rider, a short post being secured to the outer side of one of the main posts to hold the rails thereto, as

P. Beamon, No. 156,052, dated October 20, 1874, and I do not claim such construction as my invention, the same being distinguished therefrom in that the short post is.located on the inner side of the postAand abuts against the adjacent long post, so that by spreading the upper portions of the long posts the rails will be clamped tightly in position.

I claim In a fence, the combination of the posts A and A, a shorter post B, having the upper end thereof beveled, said post being adapted to bear against the post A beneath the upper crotch of the fence, said short post being secured at its lower end to the post A and to the post A, rails adapted to be maintained in position between the posts A and B, and a rider supported by the posts A and A above the rails, said rider being secured by a loop, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
