Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
EZRA T. WILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FLUID-FUEL FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,998, dated November-29, 1892.
Application filed June 5, 1891. Serial No. 395.255. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, EzRA T. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fluid-Fuel Feeders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactspecification.
My invention relates to devices of that class known as injector-burners for feeding fluid fuel, and has for its object to produce a feeder which shall thoroughly and effectually commingle the fuel fluids, converting them into a highly-indammable gas; and to this end my invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction hereinafter described, but particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figurel is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2isacross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A is a valve-handle carrying the screw-threaded block B, which engages the screw-threads C of the pressurefluid-discharging part G, the latter having a discharge-aperture provided with a valve-seat for the valve F, carried on rod R. .The part G is cut away on its sides and bottom, soA as to leave a partially-annular space around the solid portion N.
H is a stuffing-box for the valve-rod; J, a side aperture for the admission of a pressure fiuid supplied through pipe J', controlled by Valve J2. The nozzle L has a hollow body or case, which is threaded onto part G at K.
M M are screw-threaded nipples having supply-pipes M with cocks M2, constituting air-supply passages communicating with the nozzle back of the aperture in the pressurefluid-discharging part G. The solid part N of the part Ghasa channel N', formed by the side ledges O O, which leads across the aperture controlled by the valve F.
S is a side lug on nozzle L, having a fuelfluid-supply pipe S', a passage S2 communicating with channel N', a valve S3, having a handle S4, and a graduated or other indicating scale S5, whereby the rate of the flow of oil to the burner may be indicated and regulated.
The use and operation of my device is as follows: The burner is adapted to be applied to all kinds of furnaces and is intended to be used in the position shown in Fig. l. The pressu re-fluid-as, for example, steam-is admitted in suitable quantities through pipe J and aperture J into the passage in part G, whence it is discharged, when the valve is withdrawn from its seat. The air, which is to be combined with the other fluids, is admitted through apertures M and lills the nozzle. The oil is fed down by gravity through the passage S2 and intochannel N', wherein it is confined by the ledges O and conducted to the aperture controlled by valve F, and through which aperture the pressure fluid escapes. The pressure Huid issuing from the aperture is intimately mixed or commingled with the oil in the channel and the airin the nozzle and the mixture carried out violently and discharged through the nozzle in the condition of a highly-inflammable gas. The proportions of oil, air, and steam are regulable.
The arrangement and proportion of the several parts may be modified without departing from the spirit. of the invention, and Iv do not wish to be confined to the specific construction shown.
Obviously the pressure fluid may be compressed air, and the steam which is usetixl in .atomizng the oil maybe supplied through passages M. The making of the nozzle separate from the part. G is for the sake of economyand because it is otherwise better construction. Obviously a diaphragm transversely dividing the nozzle and apertured for the passage of the pressure fluid and provided on its frontside with a channel leading to said aperture, Would utilize the principle vof my invention, and the channel need not be vertical so long as it is adapted to convey the oil directly to the pressure-fluid aperture.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a Huid-fuel feeder, the combination, with a nozzle having a hollow case or body, of an interior pressure-iiuid-discharging part cut away to provide a partially-annularspace between it and the in-ner wall ot the body'of the nozzle, an air-supply opening into such annular space back of the fluid-pressure-discharge aperture, and an oil-supply way which leads through the wall of the case across the solid portion ofthe part through which the ICO pressure-fluid passes and to the duid-pressure aperture, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a Huid-fuel feeder, the combination, with a body having a discharge-nozzle, of an interior pressure-luid-dischargiug part having an aperture opening interiorly of the nozzle, flanges or ribs on the prcssureiluiddis charging part partially surrounding said aperture, whereby there is provided a channel, and a uid-fucLsupply Way delivering into said channel, substantially as described.
3. In a 'Huid-fuel feeder, the combination, With a discharging-nozzle, of a pressure-,fluiddischarging part having a threaded connection with the nozzle, and said part having a EZRA T. WILLIAMS.
