Description

(No Model.)
J. GOGERTY. GUTTER PROTECTOR.
No. 486,868. Patented Nov. 29, 1892-.
ALtest. I lNVENTOK m [3& e 'lz'l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN GOGERTY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
GUTTER-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,868, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed May 12, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN GOGERTY, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gutter-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to protect gutters or eaves-troughs from birds, particularly English sparrows, which build nests in the gutters and otherwise'obstruct and befoul them.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in cross-section a gutter and a protector therefor. Fig. 2 shows the texture of a reticulate wire fabric, of which the protector may be wholly or partly made.
The gutter 1 may be of any desired construction. The protector maybe made throughout of the fabric shown at 2, or part 6 may be made of imperforate material, as sheet-tin, and the part at of the reticulate material. A rod 3, running parallel with and hooking into the edge roll of the gutter, forms a connection for an edge of the gutter-protector, which extends over the gutter, as seen at 6, and then runs downward to the roof, as seen at 4. Links 5 connect at intervals with the upper edge of the protector and are secured to the roof, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
As the Water runs from the roof in the direction shown by the arrow in Fig. 1, it is ap- Serial No. 432,714:- (No model.)
parent that part 4 must be reticulate and that part 6 may be reticulate or not, as may be desired. If the covering part 6 is made of sheet metal, the protection will be somewhat greater, while if it is made of the wire fabric the expense will be lessened, and either way will do.
When it is desired to paint the gutters, the protector may be loosened at one side, upper or lower, as may be most convenient, and is swung back out of the way on the other connection.
The gutters may be supported in the customary manner, or the protector maybe used as a support for the outer edge, as indicated in the drawings. The protectors are made in sections of any desirable length.
I claim- A gutter-protector comprising a covering portion, as 6, connected with the front edge of the gutter and extended upward and backward above the roof, and a reticulate or perforate water-admitting portion, as 4, extending downward to and connecting with the roof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN GOGERTY.
