CONVERTIBLE FURNITURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,749, dated November 22, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY O. A'rwoon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Convertible Furniture, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to combine in a single structure a sofa and folding bedstead of a simple and economical construction and to avoid many difficulties which have hitherto presented themselves in the construction of devices of this character.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of my improved sofa-bedstead with the bed portion unfolded. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts folded in position to form a sofa. Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view of one end of the structure, showing the parts in the position illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detail.

The fixed frame comprises vertical end standards A and longitudinal bars B B b b, which support the folding portions when adjusted in either position.

Guided within the main frame is a sliding drawer D,which is preferably of suitable size to contain the necessary bedclothing, and the front of the drawer being preferably in the form of an ornamental panel d, the upper portion of which is formed by a folding flap F, hinged at f to the bar B, extending across the front of the sofa. The portion G,which when folded in the position shown in Fig. 2 forms the back-rest of the sofa, is hinged at g to the bar B, extending across the back of the sofa between the vertical end frames, and this portion is provided with folding legs g, pivoted at g and weighted, so that when the parts are unfolded to form a bed they will drop to the proper position to support said portion B, and in order to hold the legs in proper position I preferably provide looking or bracing bars 9 extending from the portion G to the leg 9.

Hinged to the upper bar g of the portion G is a second folding portion H, and this portion likewise is provided with folding supporting-legs h, hinged at h to the frame and preferably provided with locking-bars h It will be observed that the portions G and H are upholstered in such manner that when the parts are in the position to form a bed the upholstered sides will form the mattress of the bed, and when in position to form a sofa the portion G will form the back-rest, while the portion H will be at the rear of the sofa, and being upholstered will present an attractlve appearance. It will also be observed that the portion G is slightly less in width than the portion H and that the arrangement of hinges or pivot-points between the bar B and the portion G is such that when the parts are folded in position the lower bar 9 of the portion G will rest upon the bar B and the whole of the portion G will be between the u prights a, forming the rear bars of the end sup porting-frames A. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the portion H, being of precisely the same width as the distance between the outsideedges of the frames A,will fold up against the rear of the bars aof such frames, and the catches m thereon will engage with suitable orifices n in the frame H, and can be readily disengaged by exerting a slight pressure on the catches and allowing the fold ing portions to fall to the rear.

I is an ornamental top piece provided with dowel-pins 2', adapted to orifices z" in the top of the portion G when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 2; or when the parts are adjusted in such manner as to form a bed the ornamental strip may be secured in position on the outer bar of the portion H by inserting its dowel-pins in orifices i in such portion H.

In the construction of folding bedsteads one of the greatest difficulties has been the separation to a greater or less extent of the cushions or folding portions, such separation rendering the bed uncomfortable. To avoid this and make the parts fit closely together, I pivot the seat portion K of the sofa to the flap F, which in turn is pivoted or hinged at f to the front bar B of the seat-frame, and the meeting edges of said seat portion Kand the flap F are inclined, so that they will fit snugly together when the parts are in, position to form a sofa, as in Fig. 2; but in formingabed the flap F is raised, and being pivoted to the bar B will force the seat portion K to the rear and cause its rear face to press against the bar g of the portion G and forms a tight joint therewith. The flap F, being also upbolstered, adds to the length of the bed and may be supported in position in any suitable manner, preferably by the ordinary hinged catches e, as shown. The structure thus described may be readily adjusted in either of its two positions,and as the upholstered sides when unfolded will be all on the level no ad ditional mattresses are needed to form a comfortable bed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the stationary supporting-frame comprising the end sections and longitudinal connecting-bars and vertical posts a, forming part of such sections, a sliding seat portion supported by such frame, guides on said frame for said seat portion, a section G, hinged to one of the longitudinal supporting-bars and adapted to enter between the opposite vertical posts a, and a section H, hinged to said section G with supporting-legs for said sections, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the stationary supporting-frame, folding back portions, a sliding porting-frame, guides thereon, a sliding drawer adapted to such guides, a hinged flap F, having its lower edge covering the top of said drawer, a sliding seat portion connected to said flap F, and folding back portions, substantially as specified.
