SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,292, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed April 12, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN IV. IWIOCORKLE, of Lexington, in the county of Oowlitz and State of IVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved lubricator designed to be attached to the steam-feed pipe leading to an engine to lubricate the interior mechanism thereof.
The object of the invention, primarily, is to provide a lubricator in which the oil, tallow, or other lubricant will be constantly kept at about the same temperature as the steam, whereby condensation of the latter is prevented, so that water will not accumulate in the oil-chamber.
The invention comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed outin the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved lubricator. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View on the line a; 00, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cylindrical oil-chamber, and a an outer steam jacket or cylinder inclosing said oil-chamber. From the upper and lower ends of oilchamber A project branch pipes a, a which 6 :tend from the steam-feed pipe a leading from a boiler (not shown) to an engine, (also not shown.) In these branch pipes are valves 6 b, by both of which the admission of steam to the oil-chamber can be controlled and by the latter b the passage of the oil and steam may be regulated. In the branch pipe (t is a sight-tube 11*, through which the dropping oil can be seen. The opening between the upper end of the tube and the section of branch pipe is greatly reduced, so as to permit the oil to pass through in drops. let-cock D, projecting from the lower end of oil-chamber A, permits the contents thereof to be drawn off, while a similar cock at is secured to steam-jacket a for the same purpose. In the upper end of chamber A is a plug or stopper d, by removing which oil can be supplied to the oil-chamber.
E is a sight-tube of ordinary construction opening at its ends into the upper and lower ends of oil-chamber A, so that the height of the oil in said chamber will be indicated in this tube. In the horizontal ends ofthissighttube may be valves e to entirely cut off the oil and steam from entering said tube when desired.
The operation of my invention is apparent andlikewiseare the advantagesto those skilled in the art to which it appertains. In practice, the valves in the branch pipes are opened and steam will enter the oil-chamber, and also the inclosing steam-jacket and thus serve to keep the steam in the oil-chamber at its highest temperature and prevent condensation thereof and the accumulation of Water in. said oilchamber. The oil or tallow will pass down into the lower branch pipe and by reason of the contracted opening therein will fall in drops through the tube in said lower branch pipe.
A lubricator thus constructed is extremely simple and inexpensive and is certain in its operation.
I claim as my invention- The herein-described improved lubricator, comprising the oil-chamber having steam branch pipes openinginto its upper and lower ends and provided with an upper supply-opening and lower outlet-cock, a steam jacket or chamber inclosing said oil-chamber and having a lower discharge-cock, the pipe opening into said steam-jacket leading from said lower branch pipe, the valves in said branch pipe, and the sight-tube connected at its ends with said oil-chamber, substantially as set forth.
