MICHAEL MOMULLIN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1W- 312,283, dated February 17, 1885.
Application filed Septemher17, 1834. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIOI-IAEL McMULLIN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in oil-cups or lubricating devices intended especially to be used on the movable parts of machinery, as on the main rods of engines, &c., and belongs to the class of automatic feeders wherein are combined a device to regulate the flow of oil to the bearing-surface, means for retaining settled sediment or dust in the oilreservoir, and preventing such sediment in the oil being carried to the lubricating-point, and for constantly inspecting the condition and flow of oil, all of which will more fully appear hereinafter in the specification and be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 shows theplug detached, and Fig. 4 is a modification of my device.
A represents my oil-cup, which is formed of the arched top A, the flat base A and the cylindrical side a. The top and bottom are made of metal, as brass, and are provided, respectively, with shoulders I) and I), through the former of which pass the rods B, provided with threaded points to enter openings in the shoulders b and secure the parts together. The side a is a cylinder of glass fitting into grooves s in the top and bottom, and circular washers s, of cork, rubber, or other suitable material, are interposed between the ends of the cylinder and the top and bottom of the cup, to prevent leakage. I
D is a conical screw-threaded washer or packing to close the opening in the top A, through which oil is introduced, and it is perforated to admit the passage of the regulator.
E is a hollow plug, which screws into a pipe, J, attached to the bottom A of the cup, through which the oil passes to the point of lubrication. The plug E has atits upper end,on the illside, a female screw to receive the thread on the lower end of the regulator O, which first passes through the washer D and then down into the plug E, which latter has several channels, d, meeting at the center, to convey theoil from the cup to the point of lubrication by the part I, which is of less diameter than at the conjunction of the'channels d. The lower end of the regulator 0 being conical in shape, as it is screwed down into IE, it will regulate the quantity of oil entering by the channels, and allow it to pass in large or small volume, as desired, through the feed-pipe I, or out it off entirely.
e is a shoulder or flange on the plug E,which prevents any settled sediment passing out of the cup through the channels leading to the feed-pipe.
H is an opening in the pipe J, through which the quantity of oil passing through the pipe I can be observed. This is closed by a sleeve or sliding door, H.
J represents a pipe which carries the oil to the point of lubrication. It screws into the bottom A of the cup, and at the same time receives the screw-threaded lower end of the plug E.
To fill the cup, screw the regulator down into the plug E until the conical point enters and closes the feed-pipe I; then remove the washer D and introduce the oil, replace the washer, and by slacking the regulator by turning the knob c the feed through I may be regulated at will. 7
In Fig. 4 will be seen a modification of my device. In this instance the bottom and sides of the cup are made integrally of metal, and the top will screw on the side, and I dispense with the rods B and shoulders b and b.
The condition of the oil may be inspected through a plate of glass, L, set in the side of the cup. In all other respects the details of construction are the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- An oil-cup or lubricator formed of a me? tallic top and bottom, attached to a cylindrical glass side by means ot'shoulders and screwrods, as shown, and having an opening at top to admit oil, which opening is closed by a conical screw-threaded packing, said packing being perforated to allow the passage of the regulator, in combination with the flanged. and channeled plug and pointed regulator, all substantially as described.
2. In an oil'cup, the combination of the arched top A, having an opening to admit oil, said opening being closed by the perforated conical screw-packing D, with the glass cylinder at, the bottom A shoulders I) and Z), the washers s, the screw-rods B, the hollow plug E, and the regulator 0, all constructed and operating as described.
3. 111 an oil-cup, the combination of the top A, having oil-opening and screw-plug D, the glass side or cylinder a, the bottom A", pro
vided with opening to receive the screw-plug E, and pipe J, having flange 0, channels d, and feed-pipe I, and the regulating device 0, all substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, in an oil-cup or lubricator, ofthe metallicbottom Aihaving ascrewthreaded opening to receive the pipe J, and with side (ointegral with the bottom, and having an opening therein to inspect the state of the oil, closed by a strip of glass, L, with the regulator- G, the top A, arranged to screw onto the side a, and the screw-plug E, the latter provided with flange or shoulder 0, channels (Z, and feedpipe I, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
