UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER GYLFE, OF SOUTH. BEND, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LEWIS N. EKLUND, OF SAME PLACE.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION rorming part of Letters Patent No. 485,932, dated November 8, 1892 Application filed April 27,1892. Serial No. 430,853. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GYLFE, of South Bend, in the county of Pacific and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and Improved Musical Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to stringed musical instruments, such as violins, guitars, &c.; and its object is to provide a new and improved to musical instrument which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to produce a full, sweet, and soft tone when played.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will I5 be hereinafter described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with parts in section. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the sounding-board; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, with parts in section, of a modified form of the improvement.
The improved musical instrument is pro- Vided with a sounding-board A, located in the body part B of the instrument between the belly O and the back D, the edges of the said sounding-board conforming to the configuration of the sides E of the body part and secured thereto. The sounding-board A is preferably provided with a transverse strengthing-rib a on its under side. The neck, head,
strings, bridge, and tail-piece of the instrument are the same as in those of ordinary construction. \Vhen the sounding-board A is made solid, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, then both the belly O and the back D are provided with the usual S-shaped sounding-holes F and G, respectively; but, if desired, soundingholes H may be formed in the sounding-board A, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. In the latter case the sounding-holes G in the back D are omitted 5 and only those in the belly O are retained. By placing such a sounding-board A into the body part of the instrument the sound of the instrument is greatly increased and at the same time is sweeter and softer when the in- 0 strument is played.
Sounding-posts I connect the soundingboard A with the belly O, and like posts I extend from the back D to the soundingboard, as plainly shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention,
1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a musical instrument of the class described, the combination therewith of the sounding-board A, provided with the transverse strengthening-rib a and the soundingholes H and arranged between the belly and back of the instrument and attached at its edges to the sides thereof, and the soundingposts I 1' between the said board and the belly and back of the instrument, substantially as shown and described.
ALEXANDER GYLFE.
