No. 485,885. Patented Nov. 8, 1892.
f NITED STATES PATENT 'Oiiiii'ion'` f JAMES ROCI'IE, OF TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EAGLE LOOK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.,
LooK-oAs E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,885, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed August 22, 1892. Serial No. 4431685' (NO model-3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES ROCHE, of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improve- 5 nient in Drawer-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection With accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which to said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, ina Figure 1, a face view of a lock construoted in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view; Fig.
4, a View in horizontal section through the lodylof the wings and cap on the line a b of My invention relates to an improvement in that class of looks which are adapted for insertion into dovetail mortises, in which they are held in place without the use of screws or nails, the object being to assemble the body and cap of the case of such a lock without defacing the former and to reduce the cost of the looks by simplifying their assembling and finishing Operations.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a lock having its fiaring holdingwings perforated and the ends of its cap constructed with retaining fingers or lips to enter the said perforations, whereby the cap is held in place by attachment to the said wings instead of to the body of the lock.
In carrying out my invention I form long narrow perforations or slots a a, respeotively, in the fiaring wings A A of the lock-case, the said wings being in the lock shown bent extensions of the body A' which forms what is often called the front plate of the lock; but my invention is clearly applicable to looks in which the fiaring holding-wings are made independent of and riveted to the said body. In the lock shown, also, the selvage A2 forms another extension of the body of the case and rests upon the adjacent edges of the holding-WingsA A. Under my invention I provide the ends of the cap B of the case with narrow retainingfingers b b, conforming in cross-section to the dimensions of the perforations a a in the Wings aforesaid. In assembling the case the fingers at the end of the cap are jumped into the perforations in the said wings by springing the parts, and afterward the outer ends of the fingers may be riveted down, if desired. The outer and lower sides of the cap are bent inward and rest upon the inner face of the body A', and thus hold the cap against any tipping movement.
lt will be noticed that under my invention l avoid perforating the body of the case, as has been done heretofore, to receive fingers or retaining-lips formed on the sides of the cap and extended through the said perforations and riveted down, the cap being in that case held in place by means of its sides rather than by means of its ends. In the old construction, however, the body was often defaced and drawn inward during the process of riveting, so that it did not present a smooth and uniform surface for finishing, which was, therefore, more laborious and troublesolne, and the final result was never as good as it Would have been had not the body been perforated and subjected to a riveting operation. Under my construction the cap and body are secured together at points which are not exposed when the lock is in use and which do not have to be finished.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a drawer-lock, the combination, with a body having flaring holding-Wings constructed with perforations, of 'a cap having its ends constructed with retaining lips orfingers to enter the perforations in the said wings, substantially as set forth, and whereby the cap is held in place without perforating the front portion of the body and riveting the cap thereto.
2. In a draWer-lock, the combination, with a body having flaring holdingwings constructed with perforations, of a cap having its upper and lower sides turned inward to rest on the inner face of the said body, which forms the front plate of the lock, and having In testitnony whereof I have signed this its nd's eonstrncted with retaining lips or specification in the presenee of two Subscribfingers to enter the perforations in the said ing Witnesses.` Wings, snbstantially as set forth, and where- 5 by the cap is held in place Without perforat- Witnesses:
