Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. G. ASHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knob Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereunto annexed.

My invention relates to door-knob attachments; and it has for its object to provide a device by means of which knobs may be adjusted to doors of different thickness, and also any lost motion occasioned by the wear of the knobshank against the rose may be taken up.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention, in which- Figural is a view of the edge of a door having knobs attached and supplied with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the knob, knob-shank, rose, and the escutcheon in longitudinal section, and showing the different parts of my invention properly assembled. Fig.3 is a plan View of the door-escutcheon. Fig. 4 is a plan view of my invention, showing the knob-spindle in crosssection.

d is an escutcheon-plate having the opening Z of a size to loosely admit the screwthreaded sleeve f and provided with the projection 1', adapted to fit in the open-ended vided with the slots n.

The operation of my device is as follows: The ordinary holes are bored in the door, and the escutcheon 01 secured in place. The

knob 19, with the knob-spindle 7c, is then inserted. The rose 0, having the sleeve f screwed down to its limit, is then slipped over the knob-spindle, with the slot 9 embracing the projection i. The knob 20 is then secured on the end of the knob-spindle, and if there be any lateral motion of the spindle in the door it is taken up by turning the rose 0 to the right. This motion causes the sleeve f to be drawn outward and its head on to' press against the knob-shank q until all the lateral motion of the knob-spindle is taken up. In turning the knob w it will be observed that the friction occurs between the head m of the sleeve f and the face of the knob-shank q, and that the knob-shank q fits loosely in the hub e of the rose, so that in turning the knob to there is no tendency to turn the rose 0 at the same time; but to guard against the accidental turning of the rose 0 by the hand I provide it with the screw-holes 0, which coincide with the slots n in the escutoheon, through which holes and slots I put the screws 8 and screw them into the wood of the door.

When, from wear, there is lateral motion of the knob-spindle, it is taken up by removing the screws 5 and giving the rose 0 a quarter-turn or more to the right, when the screws are again adjusted.
