EDVARD LEAMY, OF SYRACUSE, NEWF YORK.
EXERClSlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,047, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed March 28, 1892. Serial No. 426,821. (No model.) Patented in England October 6. 1891J No. 16,955.
and exact specification.
This invention relates to revolving trapeze such as described and shown in Letters Patent No. 300,487, dated June 17, 1884.; and it has for its object to provide novel means for driving the shaft by which arotary motion is imparted to the trapeze.
To accomplish this object, my invention involves the features of construction andthe combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a revolving trapeze to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional end elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views hereinafter explained.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The letter A indicates a double trapeze, having spindles. or axles B, supported in the lower ends of vertical rod-supports G in such manner that the trapeze can revolve. The sides of the trapeze are strengthened by rods C, and likewise the vertical rod-supports G are braced and strengthened by rods G. The trapeze comprises end pieces D, from which the swings E E are suspended in the usual manner. The end pieces D may be provided with Weighted balance-balls F. The upper ends of the rod-supports G are connected by a horizontal rod H, braced and strengthened by rods H and carrying standards or posts K K', in the upper ends of which are mounted the axles of the front and rear wheels of a velocipede or bicycle having driving mechanism comprising a chain a, as usual. The
horizontal bar His suspended by cables, rods, or chains I in the ordinary manner.
One of the axles or spindles B is provided with a worm-wheel P', Fig. 2, engaging a worm P at the lower end of a vertical shaft O, carrying at its upper end a bevel-gear N3, meshing into a bevel-gear N2, secured to one end of a horizontal shaft M. The opposite end of the shaft M is provided with a bevelgear N', meshing into a bevel-gear N, which is connected with a chain or gear-wheel L, driven by a chain connection a with one of the axles b of the bicycle in such manner that when the pedals L of the velocipede or bicycle are operated in the usual manner to rotate the wheels thereof the chain or gearwheel L is rotated, and motion is thus communicated to the vertical shaft O, and consequently the trapeze is caused to revolve.
The vertical rod-supports G are retained in proper position through the medium of guides J, as usual in this type of gymnastic apparatus.
The velocipede or bicycle may be su pported between its front and rear wheels through the medium of a standard or post K2.
The velocipede or bicycle is provided with l a saddle or seat and the rider sits thereupon in the usual manner, and by operating the pedals or cranks L a rotary motion is imparted to the trapeze, the speed being governed by the rapidity with which the velocipede or bicycle is operated, and consequently is under control of the rider.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a revolving trapeze and a horizont-al shaft geared to the trapeze, of a suspended velocipede and gearing between the driving mechanism of the velocipede and the horizontal shaft for operating the latter to impart a revolving motion to the trapeze, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a revolving trapeze and a horizontal shaft geared to the trapeze, of a wheel L, geared to the horizontal shaft, and a suspended velocipede or bicycle having one of its axles geared to said wheel for transmitting a revolving motion to the trapeze, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD LEAMY. Witnesses:
ELTON FOUCHT, EDWD. BURTON PAYNE.
