To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PITT CANNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Protectors for the Ends of the Clothing of the Flats of Oarding-Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to the protectors which are applied at the ends of the card-clothing which is secured to the flats of carding-engines, these protectorsbeing used, mainly, on the flats of traveling flat carding-engines. These protectors serve, as is well understood, to protect and support the wires at the ends of the card-clothing which is mounted on the flats and prevent the said wires from becoming bent over and broken down either while in place on the carding-engine and during the working of the latter or while removed from the carding-engine and being handled.

My invention consists in a protector of the kind indicated, having a novel construction which fits the same for being readily applied to a fiat, and in the combination, with the said protector, of a flat which is suitably shaped for the applicationof the protector thereto, all as will be hereinafter described, and as will be particularly pointed out and claimed at the close of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of one end of a fiat, looking toward the back thereof and showing the notches made in the sides thereof for the reception of the clasping portions with which the protector is provided when the same is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with a protector ap plied to the flat. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation, showing the card-clothing and protector applied to the flat. Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section on the line A A in Fig. 3, looking toward the right-hand side in the latter figure. Fig. 5 is a view of my improved protector in end elevation. Fig. 6 is a view thereof in side elevation. Fig. 7 is a bottom view thereof.

In the drawings, is a flat of the kind used in traveling-flat carding-engines.

502 is the card-clothing applied thereto, and

503 are the rivets, by means of which the card-clothing is secured to the flat, the said rivets passing through holes 504, which are formed for the purpose near the edges of the flat.

At 51 is the protector, which is applied at each end of the card-clothing on the flat, the said protector having an intermediate protecting web or plate 512, which is a little less in height than the wires of the card-clothing, although it may be of the same height as the latter, if desired, and which, as shown in Fig.

3, extends across adjacent to the end wires of the card-clothing. At the ends of the said web or plate 512 are portions 511 511, extending at right angles to the web or plate and adapted and intended to be bent and clasped around the edges of a flat and to have the free ends thereof to rest against the back side of the fiat adjacent to the said edges.

In order to secure the desired strength in the clasping portions and avoid liability of the protector becoming loose as well as to secure proper stability, the end portions of the protector are broadened laterally, as shown. The broadening or widening is continued a short distance in the direction of the length of the protecting web or plate, the said web or plate having in efiect at each end a lateral 8o flange thereon, which is integral therewith and really forms part of the corresponding clasping or end portion of the protector. As will be seen in the drawings, the protecting web or plate stands in a plane crossing at right angles the planes of the material of the end portions, and therebyis adapted to stand parallel with the wires of the card-clothing. The protector isapplied as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it resting upon the end portion of the card- 0 clothing and the clasping end portions fitting against the edgeportion of the clothing and the flat. The free ends of the said clasping portions are then bent over upon the back side of the flat adjacent to the edges thereof, as shown 9 5 most clearly in Fig. 4., and the protector is thereby secured in place. In order that there may be no projections at the edges of the flat after the protector has been applied, the edges of the flat are notched, as at 501 in Fig. :00 1 of the drawings. The notches 501 are of a depth equal to the thickness of the clasping portions of the protector, and such portions fit therein when the protector is applied, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

I claim as my invention- 1. A protector for the ends of the clothing of the flats of carding-engines, having end portions adapted to be clasped around the edges of a flat, and an intermediate protecting web or plate adapted to stand parallel with the teeth of the clothing, all substantially as described.

2. A protector for the ends of the clothing of the flats of carding-engines, having broad end portions adapted to be clasped around the edges of a flat, and an intermediate protecting web or plate standing in a plane crossing at right angles the planes of the material of the end portions and thereby adapted to stand parallel with the teeth of the clothing, all substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a flat having notched edges and the card-clothing, of a protector having clasping end portions fitting around the edges of the fiat within the notches and an intermediate protecting web or plate standing parallel with the teeth of the clothing, substantially as described.
