UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT E. NEVVCOMB, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,810, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed December 28, 1889. Serial No. 335,184. (No model.)
To otZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. NEWcoMB, a citizen of theUnited States, residingat Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghadtotheaccompanyingdrawings, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in buttons; and the object of my invention is to do away with the necessity of sewing the button on and to provide means by which the button may be easily secured to the cloth and yet cannot readily be detached therefrom. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the button in the cloth. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the three parts of the button detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the three parts of the button detached. Fig. 3 is drawn to an enlarged scale.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
The part A, having the tube a attached to the face of the button a is placed on one side of the cloth D, as shown in Fig. 1. The tube A is preferably slightly flared. The part 0 is pushed through the cloth from the other side, and for this purpose a slight puncture may be made in the cloth before attaching the button, and the tube a, which is also preferably made with a slight flare, enters the tube a, the tube 0 being of less diameter than the tube a. The pinB is then inserted in the tube of the part A and goes through the tube 0 until the flange b projects beyond the head 0'. The flange 19 engages in the V-shaped recess in the head 0'. The tubes at and a are flared, in order that the pin B may be inserted without striking the ends of the tubes. The pin B has a spring at the endb, so that when the pin is inserted in the tubes and projects pin B may be formed from a sheet and rolled,
as shown in Fig. 3, and there may be a slit at each end. The head b rests in the recess of the head a as shown in Fig. 1.
By means of my invention a button is provided which can be attached by hand to the cloth securely and expeditiously, and the button is yet an economical one.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a button,in combination, a head having a tubular shank slightly flared, and a backing-plate having a tubular shank slightly flared, and a recess surrounding the orifice in the plate, and a pin having a head at one end and a flange at the other, the said pin being adapted to be inserted in the head through the shanks of the head and backing-plate, and the said flanged head of the pin being adapted to engage in the recess surrounding the orifice in the backing-plate.
2. In a button, in combination, the head a having the shank a, the backing-plate c, having the shank c, and. the pin B, having the spring-flange b, adapted to engage in the recess d of the backing-plate c.
3. In a button, in combination, the head a having the recess a and the shank a, the backing-plate 0', having the shank c, and the pin B, having the spring-flange b and the head I), said pin B being adapted to connect together the head a and the backing-plate c and the head b being adapted to engage in the recess a, and the springflange b, adapted to engage in the recess d.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
ALBERT E. NEWCOMB. Witnesses:
ABNER J. DAVIS, JOHN GIBSON.
