To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FELDER A. BURNAM, of

' Medina, in the county of Orleans, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following, taken in'connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in umbrellas, and has for its object the production of a simple and effective device, which is cheaply produced and greatly lengthens the life and appearance of the umbrella by permitting the extremity of the umbrellastick to be replaced when broken, injured, or worn.

To this end it consists, essentially, in acover having an opening through which the end of the stick passes, a notch mounted on the stick, having ribs hinged thereto, and an umbrellastick consisting of a lower section, having an annular shoulder for supporting the notch and a projecting spindle above said shoulder, and an upper section adapted to be passed through the opening in the cover and provided with a socket for detachably engaging the spindle on the lower section and with a shoulder for supporting the cover, and in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the Views.

Figure l is an enlarged elevation, partly in section, of the upper extremity of the umbrella-stick and the cover, illustrating the relative construction and arrangement of the parts. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the detached upper extremity of the cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the cover as shown at Fig. 3, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged top plan View of the lower section of the umbrellastick and the cover mounted thereon.

It is well known that considerable difficulty is at present experienced in providing an umbrella with a new stick and that frequently the extremity of a stick becomes broken and necessitates an entire new stick.

My invention is designed to permit either the repair of the stick or the substitution of a new stick with a minimum degree of expense, inconvenience, and time.

The umbrella-cover A is suitably secured to the supporting-ribs l3, and is provided with a central aperture a, having a metallic ring or sleeve 01., and cords a for suitably securing said cover to the ribs B. The metallic ring a consists of an upper plate a having a depending flange a and a lower plate a", upon which the lower face of said depending flange a is turned or spun for securing the two plates together, and interposed between said upper and lower plates a a and the cover are suitable washers a formed of leather, cloth, or other suitable material. It will be noted that a ring a, formed of two separate plates, as described, is more readily attached than when formed of a single piece having two integral flanges above and below the cover, and that as the depending flange a is turned or spun outwardly for securing said plates together the lower plate a forms a firm support for the flange.

E represents the umbrella-stick consisting of two sections 6 e, detachably secured together. These sections are preferably separable at the point where the notch D is supported thereby, said sections being provided with shoulders 6 separated by a smooth face and formed by an annular groove e in the stick E for receiving the notch D, in order that its top and bottom edges may bear against said shoulders, and be thereby prevented from lengthwise movement on the stick. This notch D is firmly held from revolution by a pin d, passed through the same and the stick E.

Extending upwardly from the shoulder e of the section e, in the same plane as the too shoulder of the notch D, is a screw-threaded nipple 6*, adapted to enter a screw-threaded socket e in the detachable section e for firmly securing together said sections 6 and e, as best seen at Fig. 3. The lower section 6 may be formed of wood or other suitable matorial and the upper section of metal or other material possessing greater strength than the wood, in order to prevent breakage of said extremity and. increase its durability.

It is apparent that should the extremity e become worn or injured it may be readily replacedbyunscrewingthesamefromthesection e, which is then drawn away from the cover 5 in order to permit the section e to pass within the cover before the two sections are secured together.
