HORSESHOE-BENDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,750, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed March 23, 1892. Serial No. 426,067. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WIKE, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Bending Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formxo ing part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in machines by which the ends f blanks inserted therein may be automatically swaged and the blanks then bent to form horseshoes.
The object of the invention is to produce a machine of the nature described which shall be durable in construction, rapid and efficient in operation, and practically automatic.

In the drawings, 5 indicates a substantial metal table supported on legs 6 6 and journaled in bearings in the pair of legs support- 4o ing-the rear end of the table is a shaft 7, on one end of which is secured the small gear 8, the shaft being drivenbyY a belt passing over the balanced pulley 9,-y secured to the end opposite to that carrying the gear 8.
Journaled in bearings in the frame of the table above the shaft 7 is a shaft 10, one end of which carries a crank 11 and the other end a large gear 12, which intermeshes with the gear 8 and is driven thereby.

This yoke 16 has also a central opening 20, sufficiently large to clear the largest die used on the machine, l and is provided with clamps 21 21 for securing' the swaging-blocks 22 22 in place thereon.
A portion of the table-top is cut away to form an opening 23, and in this opening is located a die-block 24 of a shape correspond- 7o ing to the inner surface of the finished shoe, this die being supported by and removably secured to the arm 24', leaving an opening through which the shoe may'fall after being bent. g l 75 The ends of the cross-bar 14 are movable in the guide-slots 25, formed in the sides of the table-frame, and are provided with vertical studs 26 26, which extend upward through the longitudinal slots 27 27, cut through the 8o surface of the table, while to the upper ends of the studs are pivoted the angular bars 28 28, provided with the rolls 29 and 29', journaled in the ends thereof. The rear ends of these bars are connected by a strong coiled spring 30, which tends to draw the rear ends together and to separate the forward ends of the same.
Secured to the surface of the table between the rear ends of the bars 28 28 are clamps 31 9o 3l, by which suitable forms 32 32 are secured in place. As the bars 28 28 are reciprocated by the cross-bar 14 the rolls 29 will travel against these guides, following the outiines thereof, and thus regulating the lines of travel of the rolls 29', carried on the forward ends of said bars 28, by which the bending of the blank around the die-block 24 is accomplished.
Depending from the center of the cross-bar 14 is a tongue 33, to which are secured the roo transverse rods 34, the ends of which are engaged in the cam-slots 35 of the levers 36 36,
which are pivoted to studs secured to the inner sides of the table-frame. The forward ends of these levers have short slots to engage the pins 37 on the rods 38, Fig. 4, which are vertically movable in guides, and at their upper ends have blocks 39, which extend through perforations in the table and serve as stops to hold the blanks while being swaged by the blocks 22 on the backward throw of the yoke 16, while on the forward throw these blocks 39 are depressed by the movement of the levers 36, operated by the rods 34, moving forward in the cam-slots thereof, thus removing this obstrnction from the advance of the arms 28. At the same time the yoke 16 is raised from the-table-surface by the rolls 18 riding over the guides 19 and allowing the ends of the horseshoe-blank to be bent around the die-block by the forming-rolls 29. An adjustable guide 40 may also be secured to the surface of the table, by which the placing of the blanks may be regulated to bring them in the proper position for swaging and bending.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a horseshoe-bending machine, the combination therewith of depressible stops for holding the blank, a reciprocating yoke, swage-blocks carried by said yoke, and means foroperating the same, as described.
2. In a horseshoe-bending machine, the combination, with depressible stops and means for automatically operating the same, of a reciprocating yoke, swage-blocks carried thereby, and means for elevating said yoke during its reci procation, as described.
3. The combination, with the table 5, supported by the legs 6 6, the shaft 7, carrying the pulley 9, and gear 8, journaled in the frame formed thereby, the shaft 10, carrying the gear 12, intermeshing with the gear 8 and the crank 11, driving-rods pivoted at the rear ends to said gear and crank, the cross-arm 14, pivotally secured to the forward ends of said drive-rods and movable in the guides 25, formed in the sides of the table-frame, the wing 33, having the transverse rods 34, depending from said cross-bar, and the pivoted levers 36, having cam-slots 35, engaging said rods 34 and pivoted to the vertically-movable rods 38, carrying blocks 39, movable through perforations in the table, of the connecting-rods 15, pivoted to the forward ends of the drive-rods 13, the yoke 16, having the opening 20, secured to the forward ends of said connecting-rods, swage-blocks carried by said yoke, depending slotted arms 17, formed in part with said yoke, bearing-disks 18, journaled in said slotted arms, and guide-bars 19, on which said rolls are adapted to travel, as described.
4. The combination, with the table 5, the cross-bar 14, having the depending tongue 33, and rods 34, reciprocatable in the guides 25, and means for reciprocating the same, the vertical studs 36, secured to said cross-arm and movable in slots cut through 'the table, the bent arms 28, pivoted to such studs and provided with rolls 29 and 29', journaled in the ends thereof, a spring 30 for contracting the rear ends of said arms, adjustable forms 32- for separating said ends, and a die-block 24, supported in the opening 23 in said table,

gaging the ends of the rods 34, the verticallymovable rods 38, carrying-blocks 39, extending through perforations in the table pivoted to the forward end of said levers, a yoke 16, carrying the swage-blocks 22 and having the arched opening 16 and depending slotted arms 17,. carrying rotatable disks 18, the bent guide-bars 19, secured to studs on the tableframe on which said rolls travel, and the connecting-rods 15, by which the reciprocation of the cross-arm 14 is transmitted to said yoke, as and for the purpose described.
