HORSE-SHIELD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,282, dated October 11, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Shields, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention contemplates certain new and highly-useful improvements in horseshields, and has for its object the production of a new and improved device of this nature which shall comprise advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and inexp'ensiveness.

The invention consists in a horse-shield having a pad provided with an opening therein and an inflexible tube extending from said opening outwardly a short distance, said tube being rigidly connected to said pad, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved horseshield. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a pad or body-piece widened at its center and having contracted or reduced ends a. To these ends are connected web-bands a, which are designed to be passed around the horses back, the ends being connected by a strap or buckle a In this pad or body-piece near its rear side is a circular hole or opening a wherein fits a tube B, which is rigidly attached to said pad, preferably by stitches through a depending portion 19 of the pad around said hole. This tube extends outwardly from the pad some distance namely, about six inches. Within'the outer end of tube Bis a perforated disk or plate I), which is removably supported by an inner circular flange 12 formed with the lower end of said tube. This disk or plate can be readily removed when desired for the purpose of cleaning or renewal. To the under side of pad A are secured two divergent metallic strips 0, which serve to brace the pad and add to the strength thereof on either side of the tube.

From what has been said it will be seen that by means of my improved horse-shield the animal is prevented from doing that for which the invention is designed and without inflicting any pain or injury. A horse-shield thus constructed is extremely simple and inexpensive and can be readily applied.

I claim as my invention 1. The herein-described improved horse shield, comprising a pad having attachingstraps and provided with a circular opening, an inflexible tube extending from said opening, and the perforated disk or plate in the outer end of said tube, as set forth.

2. The herein-described improved horseshield, comprising the pad having a circular opening and depending flange, the tube in said opening attached to said flange and having a flange in the outer end, and the perforated disk or plate supported by said flange, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described improved horseshield, comprising the pad having reduced ends and a circular opening, the web or hands secured to said ends, the strips attached to said pad and extending on either side of said opening, and the tube secured in said opening, substantially as set forth.
