T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. MAYLOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Fountain-Inkstands, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in fountain-inkstands, which improvements are fully described and illustrated in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, the novel features thereof being specified in the claims annexed to the said specification.
In the accompanying drawings, representing my improvements in fountain-inkstands, Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing the piston, funnel, and spring in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section through the tube, the piston, and funnel.
In the accompanying drawings, represent- .inkstand may be provided with a cap or cover B. The reservoir may be made of any suit able material, such as hard rubber. Inside the reservoir is placed a tube or cylinder 0, arranged vertically, and which may be conveniently formed of glass or hard rubber.
D is the funnel, and E a piston attached to the funnel and arranged to move freely within the tube 0, being supported by a light spring F. An opening 0 is formed through the funnel and piston, through which the ink rises into the funnel when the funnel and piston are depressed by the pressure of the pen on the interior of the funnel. It will be observed that the upper margin of the funnel fits the interior of the tube, so as to slide freely there in, this arrangement preventing the drying or gumming 0f the ink around the piston. At the bottom of the tube 0 is placed the perforated bottom or washer Lwhich may be formed separate from or in one piece with the tube. An opening 1' is formed through the bottom of the tube. Above the bottom may be placed the valve H, which consists, preferably, of a perforated piece of sheet asbestos or hard rubher, being provided with one or more openings s. A lateral channel may be made in the lower surface of the perforated bottom; but ordinarily it will not be found necessary. The ink will find its way from the reservoir to the interior of the tube even without the lateral channel mentioned, and will rise into the funnel and cover the nib of the pen every time the funnel is depressed. The piston is provided with one or more circu inferential grooves t, which act as a packing by becoming filled with ink to insure the tightness of the piston, while permitting the requisite freedom of motion. The funnel is made of any suitable shape, and it maybe formed in one piece with the piston or separate therefrom. In the accompanying drawings I have represented the spring F as made of hard rubber in one piece with the piston but it may be made separately, if preferred. Any other suitable kind of spring may be employed;but I prefer the hard rubber, as it remains uncorroded by the ink for any length of time. The spring may be made short, so as to bring the bottom of the piston near the valve H; but I prefer, as in the arrangement shown, to employ a longer spring and to extend the piston downward within it, as indicated at L. The spring is formed by cutting a square threaded screw on the lower part of. the block constituting the piston and by cutting the threads free in any suitable way.
The inkstand is conveniently filled by simply removing the tube containing the funnel and piston.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a fountain-inkstand, of the ink-reservoir, the inner tube open at its upper end and extending from the top to the bottom of the reservoir and having its lower end in contact with the bottom, the perforated piston arranged to reciprocate freely in the tube and carrying the funnel fitted to the tube at its margin, the spring inside the tube supporting the piston, and a restricted opening or passage at the lower end of the tube, communicating between the reservoir and the tube, substantially as described.
2. In a fountain-inkstand, a suitable reservoir, the vertical tube, and the perforated piston arranged to reciprocate freely within the tube, so as to be depressed by the pen and grooved around its circumference to insure tigh tness and carrying a funnel, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a fountain-inkstand, of the reservoir A, the inner tube 0, cornmunicating at its lower end with the reservoir, and the reciprocating perforated grooved piston E, funnel D, and a suitable supporting-v 5. The cornhinationfinafountain-inkstand, of the'reservoir A, the inner tube 0, communicating at its lower end with the reservoir, and the reciprocating grooved perforated piston E,supported within the tube by the spring F and having the extension L within the spring, substantially as described.
6. In a fountain-inkstand, a suitable reservoir, the Vertical tube, and the perforated piston arranged to reciprocate freely in the tube and grooved around its circumference, so as tovinsure tightness, and a funnel attached to the piston and fitted at its. margin to slide freely in the tube, substantially as described.
