To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WEsLEY PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Lighters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanyingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in lamp-lighters, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is the construction of a pocket-lamp that can be ignited at all times and adapted to give light and to the lighting of cigars. A pencil can be .used in connection with the same by providing a socket in the bottom of the lamp to secure a lead-pencil, that Writing may be done from the light of said lamp.

The mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a side View of the case and cap. Fig. II is a side view of the lamp with pencil attached and the case and cap in section. Fig. III is a top View of the lamp and a transverse section of the case near the top.

Like letters and numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

The lamp comprises the reservoir D, the wick-tube i, and the bottom E. On the top is pivoted the roller 5 in ears 9 and 10 and at the sides and adjacent to said wicktube. The bottom comprises the rounded parts embraced by the lower end of the reservoir, the guide-pin 8, the arresting-rim 11, and the tapering end used only to receive the end of the lead-pencil F. The sides of the reservoir are flattened to provide space for the fulminate tape 7 and the wire loop 2, attached to the inner surface of the carrier-ring O. This ring embraces the case B, on which it freely slides, and on its inner surface and Within the longitudinal slot of said case is fastened said wire loop. One end of the fulminate tape is fastened to said wire loop by folding the end within said loop and passing over the roller. The other end terminates in the space between the case and reservoir. The cylindrical case B is open at both ends. It has the slot lextending nearly the entire length and through at the top and the notch 3 at the bottom to embrace the said guide-pin of the reservoir. At the top are" attached the wires 6, which extend upward and over and terminate in close proximity to the roller. One or more of these wires are arranged sufficiently close to explode one of the series of fulminate granules adhering to the side of the tape, and thereby the wick is ignited.

The preparation and operation are as follows: Fill the reservoir with oil and insert the wick, place the fulminate tape within the case, as specified, and attach one end to the carrier-ring, then press down said ring until a granule of the fulmiuate explodes, andthe lamp is thereby lighted. The operation can be repeated until the granules are consumed. When the lamp is lighted, the pencil may be used to write with from the light thereby furnished. When the case is carried down over the reservoir, the notch embraces the pin, and thereby gives the proper relation. to the exploding-wires and the roller.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a lamp-lighter, the combination of the reservoir D with its Wick-tube and roller at the top and guide-pin at the bottom, the case B, provided with exploding-wires, slot, and notch, and the carrier-ring O with its loop for the fulminate tape, substantially as described.

2. In a lamp-lighter, the combination of the reservoir D, provided with wick -tube and roller at the top, bottom E with guide-pin and an extension for a pencil, the case B, provided with exploding-wires, carrier-ring C with loop, and the cap A, substantially as described.

3. In a lamp-lighter, the combinationof the slotted case B, the carrierring 0 with its broad loop 2, the fulminate tape 7, the igniting-wire 6, and the reservoir with its flattened adjacent sides, substantially as described.
