BROOM-HEAD.

Spccificationforniing part of Letters Patent No. 45,392, dated June 27, 1865.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CALEB 0. HAND, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Metallic Broom-Head; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to a metallic head or clamp of easy manufacture and practically indestructible,'whereby farmers and other residents of the country are enabled to restore old or worn out brooms in a few minutes by the insertion of fresh straw or brush in the head.

Figure l is a perspective view, showing the preferred form of my broom-head in its separate pieces or castings. Fig. 2 is a transverse, and Fig.3 a longitudinal, Section of the upper portion or socket. Fig.4 shows a modification of my invention. Fig. 5 shows orzejaw, or half portion of said modification.

A and B are twojaws or valves, armed with teeth 0 and D, and of suitable form to hold and'confine the butts of the straw or brush when said jaws are closed together. The up per end of one jaw, A, has a cavity, E, to receive and retain a pintle, F, which, projecting from the upper end of the other jaw, B, forms,

7 in connection with said cavity, a hinge-connection between the said jaws at their upper ends. The jaw A has at its upper part, also, a halfround projection, G, which narrows outward, and which, in conjunction with a similar but separately-cast half-round piece, H, forms a.

socket for the handle of the broom. The halfsocketG has projecting from its cavity a wedgeformed tongue, I,which, entering the substance of the handle at its extreme butt, acts to spread the same into the enlarged bottom of the socket and to securely retain it therein. Theseparate half socket piece H has a cavity,J,corresponding to the cavity E in thejaw A,and coacting with that cavity to hold the pintle F in position, while permitting its free rotation.

Kis aferrule, which, being slipped down over the closed half-sockets G and H, holds them firmly together, and at the same time secures the pintle F and the broom'handle.

Both edges of each jaw are furnished with flanges L L LL, which increase slightly in thickness toward their lower ends, so as to cause the closing together of the jaws A and B by forcing down said flanges a pair of clips, M M. v

Figs. 4 and 5 exhibit a slight variation from the above, in which the jaws are hinged together by their edges.
