Be it known that I, CLEMENT V. WHALLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Star, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Animal-Pokes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in animal-pokes adapted to be employed especially in preventing animals from pushing fences or jumping the same; and it' consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claim ed.

The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth wherein the parts are so arranged that pressure exerted against the outer side thereof will cause jagging or pricking of the animal wearing the device by pins or points projecting through the inner side of the same, the several parts being simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, easily handled and applied, and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same, showing it in one position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on the line a' x, Fig. 2.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates an outer strip, which supports aseries of pins 2, arranged parallel in the body thereof and extending outwardly therefrom at an angle. To the ends of the said strip are rigidly secured parallel slotted guides 3, encircled by coiled springs 4:, which are confined between the said strip l around the said guides and a movable strip 6, having slots in the ends thereof, through which the said guides movably extend, and pins 7, extending transversely through the said slots and through the slots of the said guides. The said guides are of iiat construction and pass through elongated narrow slots to obviate lateral movement of the movable strip 6 and always hold the same relatively to the parts with which it coacts and prevent bending and twisting of the pins 2 and also insure, positively, a return of the said movable strip 6 to its normal position. Openings 8 are also formed in the strip 6, through which the pointed pins 2 are adapted to project. The said strip 6 lies adjacent to the animal when the device is in proper position, and to sustain the same in this position a yoke 9 is pivotally connected to the upper end thereof and attached to the outer strip l, said yoke being fitted over the animals neck. To the lower end of the said strip l is secured a metallic plate 10, which completely surrounds the said end, and between the same and the material of said outer strip l a strap 1l is passed and is adapted to be connected to a suitable girthstrap on the animal.

A pressure exerted on the outer strip l against a fence will cause the pins 2 to be protruded through the strip 6 and prick the animal, with a result which is readily understood by those skilled in the art. The device is sufficiently long to obviate jumping, and a double advantage is thereby obtained.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In an animal-poke or device of the character set forth, the combination of an outer strip having pointed pins projecting therefrom and slotted guides arranged in pairs at the ends thereof and surrounded by coiled springs, said guides being flat and freely movable through narrow openings in the opposite portion of the yoke, for the purpose set forth, a yoke connected to the upper end of said strip and a strap at the lower end of the same, and an inner movable strip having slots in the ends thereof through which the guides are adapted to project and openings in the body thereof through which the pins may protrude, pins extending transversely through the said slotted ends of the inner strip and the said guides, a metallic plate surrounding the lower end of said outer strip, and a strap inserted between said metallic plate and the lower end of said outer strip, which is adapted to be secured to a girth-strap, substantially as described.
