ENITED STATES- PATENT Erica.
JOSEPH OLIFT, OF DORKING, ENGLAND.
ATTACHMENT FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,044, dated September 20, 1892.
Application filed March 2, 1892. Serial No. 423,485. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH OLIFT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Steindaeh, Dorking, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Electric Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fittings for electric and other lamps, and has for its objects, first, to fix the glass shade covering the lamp so that no shadow will be cast, and that it can be readily removed when required; secondly, to so construct and arrange the reflector that its reflecting surface or sur-- faces can be readily removed wholly or in part, as required. I attain these objects by the constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a half-elevation and half-seetion, and Fig. 2 a plan, half inverted, of my improvements applied to an electric-lamp fitting. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section showing details of holders and fasteners, and Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of fastener.
Around the top of the glass shade A, covering the electric glow-lamp A, I form a suspending-flange a. B is the reflector-plate, made of any suitable material-such as metal, wood, or the likeand of the conical shape illustrated, or it may be dished, flat, polygonal, or otherwise, according to requirements. Upon the inner surface of said reflector-plate B, I fit three or more holders 1) 17, adapted to receive and hold the flange a of the glass shade A in its position, as shown. Some of these holders may be fixed and some capable of swiveling upon a center b One I) is so illustrated, and by operating it the shade A may be removed or returned to place easily and quickly for cleaning or otherwise, as required, and no shadows are cast by the devices.
To attain my second object, I line the reflector-plate B with a number of suitablyshaped close-fitting pieces of silvered glass or equivalent reflecting material C. In case of a circular reflector-plate, as illustrated, the pieces would be sectors, as shown, and each sector is held in position at its inner end either by a continuous rim-such as cor by independent holders fixed at suitable lntervals. The outer ends are held by a number of clips E, situated either at the several oints of the sections or sectors of reflecting material, as illustrated, so that one clip Wlll suffice to hold two adjacent corners, or otherwise in convenient positions. The clips E are centered on the outside of the reflector-plateat e and capable of swiveling thereon; or instead of clips E, I may substitute for each sector a central screw and nut, button, or equivalent device, as illustrated at E in Fig. 4, capable of being moved to hold or release, as required, any or all of the reflecting-sections. Parts of the said sections of reflecting material C are removed, as at c, to admit of the passage of the shade-holders b b when used in combination.
In case of damage to any section of reflecting material it can be readily removed by operating the outer movable clips E and replaced by a new one, and cleaning is facilitated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, the lamp, the globe A, having a flange a, the reflector-plate extending over the globe, the rigid hook-shaped holders depending from the reflector and adapted to engage the flange a, and the pivoted holder 1), also depending from the defieotor and adapted to engage the flange, whereby the globe may be seeured by slipping its flange in the rigid holders and turning the pivoted holder to engage the said edge, substantially as described.
2. In a fitting for electric and other lamps, the combination, with a reflector-plate, of reflecting material made and fitted in several sectors or sections, said plate being provided with fixed holders 0 and movable holders E or E for receiving and removably securing said reflecting material, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a fitting for electric and other lamps, the combination, with a reflector-plate having lamp-cover holders 1) b and lamp-cover A, with flange a, of sectional reflecting material and holders therefor adapted to relnov ably, secure same, the said sections of the reflector having openings 0' at their adjacent 5 edges to fit around the depending supports 1) b, all substantially as and for the purposes described and illustrated.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH OLIFT.
