F. SLANGERUP. APPARATUS FOR BLEAOHING (JANE JUICE.
No. 483,022. Patented Sept. 20, 1892.
iV/TNESSES: [NVENTOR jwj fg Q ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST F. SLANGERUP, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
APPARATUS FOR BLEACHING CANE-JUICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,022, dated September 20, 1892.
Application filed June 6, 1892. Serial lib-436,666. (No model.)
To all whom it may-concern.-
Be it known that-I, AUGUST FERDINAND SLANGERUP, a citizen of Denmark, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Bleaching Cane-Juice; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in a sulphur apparatus for bleaching cane-j nice; and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawing.
The objects of my invention are to provide a new and useful device for facilitating the clarification and defecation of saccharine solutions.
The invention Will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved apparatus.
In the said drawing, A designates an ordinary sulphur stove or furnace, and B a pipe through which sulphurfumes flow into watercylinder 0. I
D is a cock provided for controlling the flow of fumes of sulphur.
E is an overflow-pipe for water. B is the pipe which leads from water-chamber O and through which the fumes of sulphur pass into j nice-tank F. Resting within j uice-tank F is a perforated pipe G, provided with an elbow H, which connects with a pipe leading to a pump K.
In practice heat is applied in the usual manner in the stove or furnace A, and the sulphur being subjected to heat the fumes flow through the pipe B into water-cylinder O, passing along over the water in cylinder and thence through pipe B into juice-tank F, the fumes mingling with the juice by passing out through openings G, thence through pipe to the pump K, where by rapid movement or agitation and mingling with the sulphur fumes the juice, molasses, or other saccharine solution is clarified or lightened, thus enabling a low grade of molasses to be made light and clear and rendering the same merchantable.
I lay stress upon the agitation of the solution and sulphur fumes in the pump-casing, since by such agitation the solution is thoroughly permeated with the fumes and the purpose of my invention facilitated.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into operation, I would say in conclusion that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein shown in illustration, as the same may be varied to some extent; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described apparatus for bleaching cane-juice, comprising a sulphur stove or retort, a water-chamber, a pipe leading from the stove or retort to the water-chamber, the solution-tank, the pipe B, leading from the water-chamber to the solution-tank and having the openings G, a pump arranged in a casing, and a pipe leading from the pipe B, adjacent to the discharge end thereof, to the pump-casing, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST F. SLANGERUP. Witnesses:
WILLIAM WILSON, LULA G. MCCARTHY.
