SAFETY DEVICE FOR WINDOW-CLEANERS.

Be it known that I, RUDOLPH DHEUREUSE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Window-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to safety devices in the Work of cleaning or repairing windows and of similar occupations, and is an improvement to a device patented to me, No. 225,704, dated March 23, 1880, which secures the use of a flexible or rigid guard, against which the operator leans, the guard to be attached to eyes, hooks, or staples firmly fastened to the case or walls of the window.

My present improvement thereto consists in securely attaching to the guard a strap, between which and the guard the loops or eyes of abody-belt can move upon and lengthwise in the direction of the guard,but which prevents the loops or eyes from leaving the guard in case the fastening at any one of its ends should give way. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the manner in which the device is used with the operator at work. Fig. 2 is a plan of the device, and Fig. 3 a vertical elevation.

A Ais a guard, here represented as a stout leather belt with buckle m to adjust its length.

B is a body-belt with one or more loops or eyes 0 to it, through which the guard passes and can move lengthwise, with sufficient play in other directions.

D is the back strap, the ends of which are secured to the guard A, and while it permits the lengthwise motion of the loops or eyes 0 along a portion of the guard A it prevents, effectually, the loop orloops or eyes of the body-belt B and whatsoever be attached to the same from leaving the guard A.

At the ends of the guard are shown in the drawings stout snaps-S S, hooked into eyes 'n,

firmly and permanently secured to the frame F of a window'vV, Fig. 1, and it is evident that hooks or staples maybe used in place of eyes and any appropriate contrivance at the end of the guard by which this is attached.

The body-belt B being securely strapped (see Fig. 1) to the operator standing upon the window-sill or upon a platform provided for the purpose, he would be positively prevented from dropping off in case of slipping, fainting, or being overcome in any manner, as the stout loop or loops or eyes 0 to the body-belt and passing over the guard will not release him. However, should by any possible cause one end of the guard become detached, the other end holding on, the detached end would drop, and the loops or eyes 0, sliding along the guard, would precipitate the operator if there were no back strap or stay, which then would come into play and hold up the loops of the body-belt B and the operator attached to it.

The loop or loops C are shown in the drawings as stout strips of leather, the ends of which, passing over the guard A, are securely fixed to the body-belt, either directly opposite one another, as Z, Figs. 2 and 3, oralongside but opposite each other, as Z, Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Suitable eyes or other equivalents for the loops may answer the same purpose.

The ends cl d of the back strap D, which is preferably of leather, are shown in the drawings to be permanently fixed to the guard A, and it seems advisable that this should be the rule. deemed preferable to have the back strap D removable, and d. d, Figs. 2 and 3, indicate how one or both of the ends of the back strap may be clamped to the guard. here the guard is of rigid material, the back strap may be so likewise, and its fastening to the guard permanently or temporarily can be effected by any method usual for such purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a safety device for the purpose described, a guard A, provided with a back strap whose ends are secured to said guard, in combination with a body-belt, as B, provided with loops or eyes, as O, substantially as set forth.
