SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,659, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed July '7, 1892. Serial No. 439,214. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES TEALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in bill or paper files; and it consists in the construction of the movable frame and means employed for actuating the same toward the vertical pins against which said movable frame bears, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a bill-le constructed in accordance with my invention, the cap or cover being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.

A designates the base, and B the vertical tubular pins which are secured near one end of the base.

C designates a movable frame, the upper ends of which are bent to engage with the vertical pins when swung toward the saine. The lower cross-bar c of the movable frame has rigidly secured thereto a concave plate b,

against which abuts the central portion of a` wire or bar spring D, said spring being bent on each side of its center to form curved portions, the ends being bent around the crossbar and extended to bear against the covering-plate or casing E. By this construction the wire or bar spring is looped near its ends and the central portion thereof bears upon the concave plate b to one side or beneath the center of the cross-bar c. When the ends of the swinging frame bear against the vertical pins B B, this spring will bear against` the concave plate at a point beneath the bar c, and when the frame is swung back against the lugs d, formed on the covering-plate, the spring will bear against the concave plate near its upper edge. The resiliency of the spring is principally at the curved portions on each side of its center, and the normal tendency of the central curved port-ion is downward. Bymeansof theparticularspring herein shown the swinging frame can be held in botli positions, and the device, being simple, is not liable to get out of order.

Having thus described my invention, I claiinl. In a paper-file, a swinging frame having the lower or connecting portion within a cover or casing, said connecting portion having a plate secured thereto which extends beyond each side of the same, and a spring located Within the casing and adapted to exert a spring-pressure upon the plate, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

2. A bill or paper iile having a swinging frame made up of a single piece, a plate b, secured to the central portion of said swinging frame, and a spring having its terminal meinbers bent to embrace the connecting portion of the swinging frame and bear upon the plate carried thereby, substantially as shown.

3. In a bill-file constructed substantially as shown, a swinging frame O, provided with a concave plate b, and a spring having a central portion which bears upon said plate, the terminal members being curved and looped around the transverse portion of the swinging frame and adapted to contact with a casing or cover, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a bill-le, the combination of a base having upwardlyproj ectin g pins B B, a swinging frame made of a single piece, the connecting portion thereof carrying centrally a plate, and a spring adapted to engage with said plate on opposite sidesof the connecting portion, so as to hold the swinging frame either in contact with the pins or away from the saine by exerting a spring-pressure on opposite sides of the cross-bar, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

5.
