J. E. HAMILTON & P. KAUPMANN, Jr. TYPE CASE AND GALLEY SUPPORT.
No.4 482,522. Patented Sept. 13, 1892.
l/l/ i l l/lll/l/lll/l/lll/l/lz/ UNITED STATES PATENT Ornrcni JAMES E. HAMILTON AND FRANK KAUFMANN, JR, OF TWVO RIVERS, VVIS- CONSIN, ASSIGNORS TO THE HAMILTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-CASE AND GALLEY SUPPORT v SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,522, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed May 5, 1892. Serial No. 431,881- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES E. HAMILTON and FRANK KAUFMANN, Jr., citizens of the United States, and residents of Two Rivers,
in the county of Manitowoc, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typo-Case and Galley Supports; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact dero scription thereof.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of type-case and galley supports; and it consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims. a
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail secizi onal view of the device, taken on line 3 3 of In said drawings, A A represent two similarly-shaped brackets, each of which is pro- 2 5 vided with a horizontal base A and an up Wardly and rearwardly extending part A for supporting the upper type-case B.
Lugs a a are conveniently formed at the lower ends of the inclined supports A A against which lugs the lower edge of the upper type-case rests when in position.
A forwardly and downwardly inclined arm C is provided upon the front end of the base A of each bracket A, and these arms serve 3 5 as supports for the galley C.
Supporting-pieces D D are provided for the lower type-case E and are pivotally engaged, as at d d, with the forward ends of the base portions A A of the brackets A A, each of 0 said supporting-pieces being provided with straight surfaces D D, upon which the lower type-case rests, and with upturned ears or lugs d d, arranged to engage with the front and back edges of said case to retain the same 1,5 in position.
The construction of the supports D D for the lower type-case is such as to bring the center of gravity of said case immediately over the pivotal supports cl d when the case is moved into a horizontal position or a little to the front or rear of said supports, accord ing to the direction of the inclination of the case. By reason of this construction the lower case E may be very easily and readily tilted toward the back or the front of the device, as may be desired, and will remain in either position until again moved, being retained in such position by gravity.
In the use of our improved device the compositor standing in front of the cases selects 6o therefrom the types in the usual manner, (the lower case being in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) and when his composingstick is filled he tilts the lowercase E backward by a slight touch of the hand to the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, so as to expose the galley C below the forward edge of said case. He then deposits the matter in his com posing-stick in the galley C and brings the case E back to its first position by a slight 7o pressure of the hand. In this manner the work proceeds until the galley is filled, when it may be removed and replaced by another.
It will be observed that by reason of the pivotal connection of the lower case E with the brackets and the ease with which the said case may be moved very little exertion is required upon the part of the compositor and the movements of said case may be easily effected by aslight pressure of one hand while holding the composing-stick in the other.
By our improvements much of the compositors time is saved and the device is rendered more compact than would be the case were the galley placed upon separate supports or at a point remote from the type-cases.
Our improved device may of course be applied with equal benefit to single or double typecases, as may be desired, the operation of the device being the same in either case.
Ourimproved type-case and galley supports are simple and strong in construction, cheap to manufacture, and very durable.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with a bracket provided with supports for an upper type case and with suitable galleysupports, of a support for a lower type-case, pivotally engaged with said bracket and adapted to permit said case to normally rest above said galley, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a pair of brackets having upwardly and rearwardly extending arms adapted to support an upper typecase and with forwardly-extending galleysupporting arms, of supports for the lower type-case, pivotally engaged with said brackets and adapted to be vibrated so as to give a rearward or a forward inclination to said lower case, the arrangement being such that when said case is inclined forwardly it will rest above the galley and when inclined rearwardly it will expose the same, substantially as set forth.
3. A type-case and galley support comprising a pair of brackets provided with upwardly and rearwardly inclined supports for an upper type-case, forwardly and downwardly inclined galley-supporting arms and intermediate horizontal base or supporting surfaces, and lower type-case supports engaged with opposite ends thereof and extending below said ends and pivotally engaged with said brackets adjacent to their horizontal supports, said pivoted supports being adapted to be moved so as to give a forward or a rearward inclination to said lower typecase, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
