JEWELRY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,483, dated September 13, 1892.

Application filed May 26, 1892. Serial No. 484,408. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRSLLEHR, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Nos. 203 and 205 Madison street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates more particularly to finger-rings or similar articles of jewelry in which removable stones or settings are used; and it consists in the means for securing the stone or settin gin place, as hereinafter specified.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top view of a ring and setting embodying my in vention. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of a stone or setting removed from the ring. Fig. 3 is an inner plan view of the ring. Fig. 4c is a section across the end of the stone or setting. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the setting and a portion of the ring. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of a metal plate and latch employed; and Fig. 7 is an inner plan View thereof.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a ring, and A is the boxing to receive a stone or similar setting A The end walls of the boxing A are undercut, as at a, to provide keepers for the stone or setting locking mechanism, which I will now describe.

B is a metal plate secured to the stone A It may be secured to the stone in any desired manner, and 1 do not limit myself to any specific means therefor; but I finditconvenient to provide the stone with a longitudinal groove having undercut side walls and to seat the plate B therein, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. One end of the plate B is provided with an integral locking lug or projection b to engage in one of the keepers a, and the other end is provided with a rotary latch b, adapted to engage in the other keeperaof the boxing. The latch bis of segmental form, having a straight side b and is seated in a recess 12 in the plate B. A pivot a extends from the latch I) through a hole in the plate B and is provided with a transverse groove to receive a small screw-driver or similar tool for the purpose of turning the latch.

The bottom of the boxing is provided with a hole a through which the tool may be inserted to reach the pivot a.

I have shown the ring as provided with a hole a near each end of the boxing, as it is obvious that the stone may be turned with the latch to engage in either of the keepers a.

In inserting the stone the latch b is first turned so that its straight side 11 is outward and flush with the end of the plate B. Then the integral lug b is inserted in one oil the keepers a. Then when the stone is pushed down in place the latch 12 may be turned to project under the other keeper a. The looking position of the latch is plainly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In an article of jewelry, the combination, with the boxing, of the stone or setting, a log or project-ion thereon to engage in a keeper in the boxing, and a rotary latch thereon to engage in another keeper in the boxing, substantially as specified.

2. In an article of jewelry, the combination, with the boxing having the keepers, of the stone or setting,the plate secured thereto having an integral lug or projection to engage in one of the keepers, and the rotary latch movable into the other of said keepers, substantially as specified.

3. In an article of jewelry, the combination, with the boxing having the keepers, of the stone or setting having the groove, the metal plate seated in said groove, an integral lug on said plate, and the rotary latch seated in a recess in said plate, substantially as specified.

4. In an article of jewelry, the combination, with the boxing having the keepers and a hole in its bottom, of the stone provided with a groove having undercut side Walls, a plate seated in the groove and engaged by the side walls, an integral lug or projection on said plate to engage in one of the keepers, and a rotary latch on said plate having the pivot provided with the transverse groove, substantially as specified.
