CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,461, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed December 14, 1891. Serial No. 415,037. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. SAMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved carcoupling; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improved carcoupling, which is constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the link for coupling the draw-heads together.
To put my invention into practice, I provide two draw-heads 1, each of which is provided with three openings 1 2 3, formed in the front faces of the same and extending rearward or in the direction of the length of the said draw-heads. Formed in each of the drawheads is a cylind rical opening 5, which extends down through the openings 1 2 3 and serves to contain the coupling-pin 7. To couple or connect these draw-heads, I provide a link having a rectangular end S, with an opening 9 through the same for the purpose of passing the pin through the same, and the other end reduced in thickness and pointed at 10, and also provided with an opening 11 to connect with the other draw-head. By means of drawheads constructed as described cars of different heights may be coupled together and the pointed end of the link easily entered in one or the other of the said openings 1 2 3 in the face of the draw-head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described draw-head, having a series of openings arranged in the front face, the one above the other, and a vertical opening for the pin passing through the said open ings, in combination with a link having a rectangular portion adapted to fit into one of the openings, a circular opening through the said rectangular portion, and the reduced end of the said link having an opening for the pin of the other draw-head, and a point formed on the said link, substantially as and for the purpose described.
