SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,870, dated August 30, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRlTZ H. RIEPE, Jr., and CHARLES E. HILGEMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Metropolis City, in the county of Massac and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Stoves and Draft- Regulators Therefor; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in heating-stoves and draft-regulators therefor; and it consists of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View through a stove embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the end of the air-inlet pipe. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of said pipe.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings, referring to which- A designates the combustion-chamber of a stove, which is provided in its top or roof with an opening B, through which fuel can be placed in said chamber, and with a smokeexit pipe or flue O. The shell of the stove is preferably composed of sheet-iron, as is usual in the construction of the ordinary portable camp-stove.
Below the combustion-chamber A is formed an air-chamber D,which communicates with the external air through suitable openings or aperturesE; but said air-chamberhas no connection with the combustion-chamber A.
The stove is mounted on suitable legs, and to the body thereof is securely attached a foot rail or rest F.
Air is admitted to the co mbustion-chamber A through a pipe or fiue G, preferably of the form shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of this air-inlet flue is partially closed by a head H, which is rigidly secured to the inner wall of the pipe G, and in said head are formed two openings or apertures, which are separated by a rib or partition J, the openings being at one side of the center of the head.
Over the free outer end of the air-inletpipe G is fitted a short sleeve K, provided at its outer end with an inwardly-extending or radial flange L. The sleeve K is secured on the air pipe or flue G by means of bolts M, passing through elongated slot-s or eyes N, formed in the sleeve K and the wall of said pipe, so that the sleeve K can be adjusted longitudinally to a limited extent on the pipe G.
A regulating-plate O is arranged between the head H and the inwardlyprojecting flange L of the sleeve K, and in said plate are formed apertures P, separated by a rib Q and adapted to align with the apertures in the plate K when it is desired to have the fire in the combustion-chamber burn freely. A handle R is attached to said regulating-plate O, by means of which said plate can be moved to cause the apertures P therein to align with the apertures in the plate H or to cover the apertures in said latter plate.
The operation of our improved regulator will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings. The regulating-plate is held between the plate in the air-inlet pipe and the radial flange in the sleeve K and is turned by the handle R. No pivot'is required for the regulating-plate. The sleeve K can be adjusted longitudinally, so as not to bind too tightlyon the regulating-plate. By this regulator the amount of air admitted to the combustion-chamber can be easily regulated.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an air-inlet pipe of a stove, of asleeve connected to said inletpipe and provided at its free end with a radial flange and an apertured regulatingplate fitted between said flange and a fixed head secured within and partially closing the flange on the sleeve, and a plate secured withouter end of the inlet-pipe, substantially as in and partially closing the outer end of the shown and described. air-inlet pipe, substantially as described.
