Be it known that we, CHARLES BURGON and HARRY BURGON, sheep-shear manufaeturers, 0f Malin Bridge, near Sheffield, in the connty of York, England, do hereby declare the nature of our in vention for Improx ernents in Apparatus for Shearing 0r Olipping Sheep er other Animals and in what manner the same is to be performed t0 be particularly deseribed ancl aseertainecl in an 1 by the f0l lowing statement.
This invention relates to instrumens for shearing 0r elipping sheep und other animals, such as are deseribed in the specification of a previous applieation f0r Letters Patent (lated the 5th day of Mareh, 1892, Serial N0. 423,941; and theimprovements consists, first, in an improved mode of mountingthe forked cross-head upon the vibrating 0r oseillating lever, by whieh the top cntters are driven, and of applying a spring t0 press the said eutters 011 the combplate with the necessary pressnre, and, secondly. in an improvecl coustruction of the pivotalaxis upon whieh said vibrating lever oseillates, whereby the werking loose of said axis, as heretofore made, is obviated. Aceording t0 the first improvement the forked cross-head is provided with two prongs onlyone near each end. Ib is Carried by a socket pivoting freely upon the 0scillating or vibrating lever, so that the pressure 0f the cross-head will be divided equally between the two prongs 0r limbs, which mus necessarily press upon the two ends Of the top cutter-plate With equal pressure, whereby an equal disoribution of the pressure on the top cutter-plate is insurecl. The spring is carried by a shank fitting in a socket in the end 0f the vibrating lever-arm and securecl by a cross-pin passed through both, the

The improvernent in the pivotal axis of the oseillating 0r vibrating lever consistS in forging a eentral stud solid with the rgcking baseplate, screw-threading it, then after placing the vibrating or oscillating lever in position panded so as t0 canse in to bind tightly in the sleeve without; injuring the screw-thread. The parts can only be dismounted by drilling 0ut; or otherwise removing the drif-pin; 0x, if desirecl, the hole may be expanded by a conieal drift- 0r punch without being permanently plugged bya pin.

'lhis freed0m 0f self-adj ustment is the more necessary, inasmuch as in order so insnre as efficient cutting action toward the extremities of their stroke as at ehe rniddle it is found in practice desirable to grind the upper surface 0f the comb-plat A with a Very slighu coneave cmvature in the transverse direction. The rocking base-plate Eis pivoted 011 a oross-pin e in the n1ain frame, as before, and has forged in onewith ita stud G,whieh is screw-threaded, as shown, and upon it is soiewed the sleeve H, after the Same has been fitted in the boss of lever O. The sleeve is 0f hardened steel. It has the head h to inelose the ball-bearings and hold the 1ever down. A centra1 hole is bored in the end 0f stud G, which is expanded (after the sleeve is screwed hard down on the base-plate E) by a taper drift-pin g, permanently 01 temporarily driven in.
In other respeets the machine is similar in construction and operation to that described in the specification 0f the previous patent hereinbefore referred to.
Having 110W particularly described and ascertained the natuyre of 0111 said invention and in what manner the same is t0 be performed, we declare that What we claim is 1. In the herein-described shearing or alipping maohine, the combination, with the vibrating 1ever, of a neutral sprin g bearing on the top outter-plate and caxried by a shank rigid1y fixed on the end of the said 1evor, and a forked cross-head ha.ving two prongs adapted to bear on and engage with tho ends of the top cutter-plate, and a central Socket pivoting freely on the end of the vibrating lever, as described.
2. The combination, With the vibrating 1ever spring-shank fibted therein, a.nd a forked cross-head and socket pivoting thereon, of a oross-pin traversing the springshank and vibrating lover and received in circun1ferential sl0ts in the cross-head Socket so as to uninta.in the conneetion 0f both the spring and crossixead with the 1ever while permitting the pivotal motion of the cross-head, as described.
In the herein-described shearing 01 alipping maehine, the eombination, with the rocking base-plate, of a stud forged integrally therewith anti of a sleeve screwed thereon and adapted t0 fit; in the boss of, and t0 form the upward bearing-surface for, the vibrating 1ever, as speoified.
4. The combination, With the screw-stud forged integra1ly with the rocking base-plate and with the sleeve screwing thereon, 0f a drift-pin forced int0 a hole in the end of the stand so as to expand the same, as specified.
