JEREMIAH B. GARLAND, OF OSAGE CITY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN N. CRAIG, OF COYVILLE, KANSAS.
EGG-TESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,487, dated August 23, 1892. Application filed May 16, 1891. Serial No. 393,060. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH B. GARLAND, of Osage City, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and 5 useful Improvements in Egg-Testers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica tion.
[ My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements for testing eggs, and in combination with the same a means for discharging the eggs into the crates after the same have been tested; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a plan view of my improved device, showing the dumper in position in the egg-testing box. Fig. II is a vertical broken :0 section of the same, showing the dumpingslats in the dotted lines thrown into a vertical position, which position they assume as the eggs are discharged into the crate. Fig. III is a detail section showing the slide in 25 front of the testing-box and spring for retaining the reflector in position. Fig. IV is a perspective of the testing-box. showing sliding shutter in front and sliding lid on top for closing a portion of the apertures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents my improved egg-testing box, having its front end 2 beveled or constructed on an angle, as shown at 3. In said beveled portion I have placed slides 4: 5, which may be adjusted as 35 maybe desired, according to the amount of light admitted to the box, said slides having knobs 6 thereon for operating the same.
'7 represents the reflector for testing the eggs, said reflector being removably secured to the bottom of the box by a spring 13 and adapted to be inserted through an opening 9 in the forward end of the box, as shown in Figs. I and IV. By removing said shutters 4 5 said reflector may be easily withdrawn by inserting the hand through the opening 9 in case it is desired to clean the same or use it for other purposes, the reflector having a ring 10 secured thereto, which maybe grasped by the hand.
Above the beveled portion 3 I secure a guard 14, having a staple thereon, said guard being held in its upright position by a hook 16, which is connected with the front of the box,
as shown at 17, the object of said guard being to relieve the eye or to prevent the operator from looking down on top of the eggs. In case of shipping or other handling said hook may be disengaged from the guard and the same be allowed to fold down on top of the tester.
Where it is not desired to use the dump- 6o ing-tray, I provide a perforated top piece 18, (see Fig. IV,) which may be made of wood or other material and supported in any suitable manner.
22 is a sliding cover having a bail 23 and adapted to form a top for the crate when not in use and to close any number of the openings 24 in the perforated top 18 when it is desired to test a less number of eggs than the number of openings in said top.
The form of dumping-tray shown in the drawings is described and claimed in my allowed application, Serial No. 420,861, filed February 9, 1892.
The object in making one end of the box beveled,as shown at 3, is that the person testing the eggs can look into the same and onto the glass or reflector without bending the body into an uncomfortable position.
My tester can be used by either natural or artificial light, the light coming from the outside of the tester.
I claim as my invention 1. In an egg-tester, the combination of the box 1, a reflector located therein, a beveled por- 8 5 tion 3 in said box having an opening, means for the partial or entire closing of said opening, a guard lat, hinged to said box above said beveled portion. and means for securing said guard in an upright position, substantially as 0 and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an egg-tester, the combination of the box 1, having a beveled end 3 opening therein, means for closing or partially closing said opening, means for supporting eggs'in said 5 box, a reflector 7, and a spring 13 for holding said reflector in position, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
J EREMIAH B. GARLAND.
