NrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL WIENER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.l
PICTU RE-FRAIVI E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,21*?, dated August 23, 1892. Application led April 23, 1892. Serial No. 430,319. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL WIENER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames, of which the following is a specitcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in
Figure 1 is a face view of a picture-frame in which is embodied my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of Fig. l on line fr. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the back of the picture-holder. Fig. 4 is an enlarged edge viewr of the flanged ring to the picture-holder. Fig. 5 shows the edge of the back plate and the inside of the fiange thereof, which in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4 is inserted within the flange of the exterior ring. Fig. 6 represents the back plate removed from the other parts, and it is seen as though looking down on the same part at Figs. 4 and 5.
The novelty and construction of this invention will be fully comprehended by reference to the following detail description.
A represents the back of the frame, which I make of earthenware, lacquered ware, wood, metal, or other suitable material and in various forms and variously ornamented; but I preferably retain the concave or dished front face, as shown at Fig. 2.
The picture-holder is constructed of metal stamped or spun in the required form, to wit: The rim of the holder, as shown, is constructed with one half I ot' about double the width of the other half J; but the Iiange C, which holds the glass D in place, is of uniform width on the portions I and J. The back of the holder is a semi-disk G with an upturned flange K,
which is of such a width as to come even with the wide portion I of the riin I J when placed therein, as shown in section, as at Figs. 2, 3, and 5. The back thus in position is soldered or secured to the rim I and the holder is complete. The semi-disk back is then coated with the best earthenware cement or other suitable cement and secured to the back A. The circular glass is then placed in the holder by sliding it under the back G, and the stiff-paper-bo ard back F is inserted back of the glass, and the circular photograph-card or picture is inserted between the circular paper back and the glass. To conceal the space through which the cards and glass are inserted, a border B, made of plush cords twisted or braided together, or other ornamental device is placed closely around the rim I J, as shown at Figs. l and 2. Byremoving the border the picture can be drawn out and another picture inserted in its place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improvement in picture-frames, consisting of the metal band I J, provided with an internal flange at one edge and the portion J reduced in width to form a space for inserting a glass, picture-card, and a paper-board back, in combination with a semicircular plate G, provided with an internal Iiange inserted within and secured to the rim portion I, the dish-shaped backrA, and a border B, placed around the rim I J, as and for the purpose specified.
PAUL IVIENER.
