BUILDING-FRONT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,115, dated August 16, 1892.

Be it known that we, FRANK MESKER and THOMAS O. ARBEGUST, of St. Louis, Missouri, have jointly made a new and useful Improvement in Building-Fronts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Hitherto in the construction of buildingfronts the practice has been to make the window-frames as additional parts to the studdine.
The improvement under consideration consists, mainly, in merging the stiles of the win- (low-frames with the studding, substantially as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a frontelevation of that portion of abuilding-front with which the improvement in question is immediately connected, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in each of the figures.
A represents a wall, such as is used at the side of a building or as a party-wall, and B represents the window. These parts are of the ordinaryconstruction, saving as they are modified or supplemented by the improvements under consideration. The window has the customary sashesD and D. E represents the left-hand stile of the window-B. It will be observed that the ordinary studding which is generally placed against the wallAis omitted and that the stile is suitably strengthened by giving it suitable proportions to serve for a studding.
A parting-strip between the sashes is shown substantially as shown.

at F, and G represents the inside finishingboard, and the space H, which contains the sash-weights I and which is formed by placing the stile sufficiently apart from the wall A, is inclosed in front by means of the metallic sheet J.
The wall A is provided with a column L, which in practice is generally made of sheet metal and shaped and attached to the wall, The flangej of the sheet J is inserted in the wall A, and the flange j is secured to the stile, and between its flanges the sheet is made with an outwardly-extending offset 7' and this part of the structure is completed by means of the beadstrip K, the bead-strip being nailed to the stile, so as to confine the flange to j.
We claim The building-front having the Wall A and the window-frame provided with the stiles having set therein the parting-strips and the metal sheets, each having an outwardly-extended offset terminating in flanges, one secured to the stile and the other entering the wall, said metal sheets also having series of offsets integral therewith and forming columns, substantially as set forth.
