BOLT-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,858, dated August 16, 1892.
Serial No. 437,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. RANSOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kirks ville, in the county of Adair and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Bolt- Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolt-cutters adapted to be used in cutting either a single bolt or a multiplicity of the same; and it consists of the construction and arrangementof parts thereof, as willbe more fullyhereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a bolt-cutter of simplified construction and operation and whereby three bolts may be cut at one and the same time by a single operation or movement of the cutter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved bolt-cutter. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same with a portion of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutters proper, detached.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the casing, which is made in two parts and consists of a body 2 with flanges 3 and lateral openings 4, the said flanges 3 acting as guides, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth. A face-plate or cover 5 is detachably connected to the body 2 and extends over a portion of the latter and forms therewith a passage-way for the movement of the cutter. The front end of said plate is beveled, as at 5 to provide for a clear space in cutting the bolts, and is also formed with a central recess 7 to assist in forming said clear space for the operation of the cutter. Both the body 2 and the plate 5 are formed with an opening 6 and recess 7, as stated, through which one of the bolts to be cut may be passed. A T- shaped stationary cutter 8 is mounted in the front portioif of the casing and has the endsthereof projecting laterally through the openings 4, and the inner edge of the head 9 of the said cutter is beveled, and to adapt the same to have the ends thereof extend through the said openings 4 the said head is made longer than the casing is wide, as will be readily understood. A reciprocating cutter 10 is mounted between the flanges 3 and is removably fitted in a recess formed in the rear shank 11, provided with corrugated teeth 12 on the opposite edges thereof, which are adapted to be engaged by oppositely-disposed toothed sectors 13, carried by the front ends of handles 14: and pivotally mounted between the parts of the casing by removing vertical bolts 15, extending therethrough. The front portion of the reciprocating cutter 10 is T-shaped to provide a laterally-extending head of the same size as the head of the stationary cutter hereinbefore set forth, and having a beveled edge 16 for an evident purpose, and the said reciprocating cutter is adapted to have its head contact with the head of the stationary cutter in cutting the bolts. One bolt to be out is passed through the opening 6 and recess 7 to be engaged by the central portions of the knives and the other bolts are placed between the heads ofthe cutters adjacent to the outside edges of the casing. In moving the reciprocating cutter 10 backward and forward the handles 14 are respectively turned outward and inward in the arc of a circle. The two cutters are about the same size and shape and are made detachable in order that they may be properly sharpened or otherwise manipulated, and the slots 4 are made sufficiently long to permit the reciprocating cutter 10 to have free movement therein. The portions of the casing adjacent to the slots 4 are recessed or formed with depressions, as at 16*, sothat the bolts cut by the outer projections of the cutter will be provided with a seat, as will be readily seen.
The parts of the device entire are strong and durable and are arranged in such manner that the cutters will have a rein-forced bearing during their cutting action, which will greatly facilitate the operation.
The front end of the device is made square and the cutters are closely arranged thereto in order that bolts situated in corners or angles may be readily cut.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a bolt-cutter, the combination of a casing having an opening extending through the same and slots in the opposite edges thereof, a stationary cutter having its end projecting through said slots, and a reciprocating cutter also having its ends projecting through said slots and adapted to be moved toward the said stationary cutter, whereby three bolts may be cut at one and the same time, two of the same being cut by the portions of the cutters projecting beyond the sides of the easing and the other being cut by the central portion of the said cutters, substantially as described.
2. In a bolt-cutter, the combination of a casing having slots in the opposite sides thereof and openings through the said casin g, a stationary cutter of T shape within the casing and having its ends projecting through and beyond the sides of the said casing, a reciprocatin g cutter having a T- shaped head laterally projecting through said slots and adapted to contact with the said stationary cutter and provided with a toothed shank, and handles pivoted in said casing and having toothed sectors engaging the said toothed shank of the cutter set forth, the said casing adjacent to the slots therein being depressed or recessed, substantially as described.
