To all 2117mm it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES (PROBE, a subject of the Queen .of Great Britain, residing at Mount Vernon in the county of "Westohester and State of I cw York, have invented aceriain new and useful improvement in Devices for Supporting Fixtures, of which the following' is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a I0 simple and effective device for hanging electric-light fixtures from ceilings formed of hollow brick and in places where the usual pipe located in an undesirable part of s rooni.
In carrying my invention into clieeti first form a hole through the plasterof thcceilinsr andinto the hollow brick. into tiiis opening I insert a short stem 0;? shanlr having" two cross-pieces at the top, between which are pivo'ted two short arinsheld at right angles to the stem by springs and ,prevented from tilting npivartlt is, above a horizontai linehy reason of the inner eons of the arms resting; on the top of the stem. The two a1 us while the device is beingflnserted into the opening; are forced downward against the pressure oi the springs until close enough to the stem to allow it .to he pushed upward throurrh the openin When the ends of the arms clear the opening they are causedto rise by the spring-pressure and again stand at right anglee to the stem. The two arms will rest on the inside of the holloiv brick and the store will he held in position. The lower end of the stern has an external screw-thread for coupling the main pipe of a lixturo to itwhen used for that purpose, and has also a screwthreaded hole at its lower end for roccivinga screw when it is desired to support a centerpiece or othercovering for the opening before the electriclight fixture is put in place or after the fixture taken down.
My invention isillustrated in the acconipanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of 'a simple eleotrio-light fixture embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the device while being' inserted into the ceiling. Fig. 3 shcwsthe device, partly in section .anii supporting a center- 0 niece or other covering for ihe onening; and
Fig. i is a too view of the device.

d a metal stem or shank having cross pieces 6, and between which are pivoted the arrnsf, held at right angles to the stem (1 by springs g, WOil Illl? on the inclines 72. As the stem (5 is passed up through the opening 0 the arn1sy"are forced c'lownward against the stem (7, and held in such position until the ends of the arms clear the opening 0, when the snrings 5/ will force them upward, so that \vnen the stem (Z is released or drawn down vv'artl the arms 1' will rest on the inside of the hollow brick. The nrxnsfare prevented from rising; above the horizontal position by means of the finger 1T ,exgending from the inner end of each arm, and which rests on he top of the stem (Z.

'ifhat i claim is-,
of the character described, of a stem, arms pivoted thereto at its upper end, springs sosaid arms at approximately right angles to the stern, and means to prevent further movethi .adedcpeninn' 7 l l 2 or supported therefrom fixture is sects so put in place immediately especially for in positions where itwill be the springst viml the body of the stem by oted orins to assume n. position parallel with 1. The combination, in 1- supporting device cured to the body of the stem and holding.
rnent of said arms, substantially as described.
fixtures from hollow ceilings, having, in combination, a stem or shank, two arms pivoted thereto, springs for keeping said arms ex- 5 tended, means for preventing said arms fror rising above a horizontal point-,- and a screwthreaded opening at vthe lower stem, substantially as set forth.
end of said 3.- In a device for support ing'fixtures from 10 hollow ceilings, the combination of the stem or shank d, pivoted arms f, springs g for keeping said arms at right angles to the stem; fingers 2', preventing said arms from rising above. the horizontal point, and screws-threaded opening 70 at the lower end of stem 01, sub- 15 stantially as set forth. v
In witness whereof 'I have hereunto set 1n hand this 14th day of December, A. D.- 1889.
