COMBINED SPOOL-HOLDER AND THREAD-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,455, dated August 9, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANDREAS EIoHHoRN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new andusefullmprovementsinaCombinedSpool- Holder and Thread-Cutter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in combined spool-holders and thread-cutters; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be morefully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention as applied to an ordinary table. Fig. 2 is an end detail view showing the manner of securing same to a table. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the knife or thread-cutter.

The object of my invention is to provide a device upon which a number of spools of thread, yarn, and similar material may be removably secured, and a knife or thread-cutter forming a part of my complete invention for cutting the thread when enough has been unwound from the spool, at the same time insuring a clean end of the thread which is to be passed through the needle.

The use of my invention is especially designed for tailors, seamstresses, or other persons whose work requires a number of different sizes or colors of thread, and provides against the delay occasioned by the misplacing of the spools.

This combined spool-holder and threadcutter may be secured to a table, shelf, chair, sewing-machine, or whatever object is convenient for the use of the operator.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary shelf or table to which my invention is applied.

2 represents a suitable strip of light metal, the same forming what might be called a foundation for the device. Secured to the strip 2 by means of rivets 3 is aright-angular clamp 4, adapted to fit over the table 1. This clamp is in the shape of a square with one side left out, and said clamp is provided with a perforation 5 in its free end 6,said perforation being interiorly screw-threaded.

Adapted to be adjusted in the inter orlyscrew-threaded perforation 5 is an exterior-lyscrew-threaded thumb-screw 7, the same being of ordinary construction and having fitted on its outer screw-threaded ends 8 a clampingblock 9, secured'thereto in any suitable and mechanical manner. 7

10, 11, and 12 indicate upright stationary 6o spindles secured to the strip 2 in any mechanical manner and are adapted to receive an ordinary spool of thread, such as is shown by 13, said spool being provided with a hole through its center constructed to fit over the 5 spindles. In this connection I desire to state that the strip 2 may be of any length and may have any number of upright spindles such as 10, 11, and 12without affecting in the least the original function of my inven- 7 tion.

Upon the end of the strip opposite to that on which the spindles are secured is a knife or thread-cutter 14, the same being appropriately hinged to the end of the strip 2 in any mechanical manner.

Preferably I use a hinge of the following construction: A hollow ear 15 is formed upon or with the strip 2 and two ears 16 adapted to fit within said ear 15. Said cars 16 are formed with or upon the knife 14, and when these cars are fitted together a pin 17 is placed through all three of the ears, thus forming a hinged joint.

Having fully described the mechanical con- 5 struction and briefly stated the object of my invention, I will now proceed to describe the operation of same. Take, for example, a tailor working upon a suit of clothes in which it is necessary for him to use both linen and 9 silk thread of different sizes, and without the use of my invention the various spools are perhaps scattered around in the vicinity of his work-table, and when he needs a certain size or kind of thread it is necessary for him to stop his work and search for the same, perhaps scattered around under other garments or upon the floor. If it is necessary for him to use five different kinds or sizes of thread, he can fasten one of my devices near him and place upon the spindles thereof the different spools of thread. He has by this means the thread where he can find it without any search, and by using the knife or thread-outter he can cutoff the thread any desirable length without breaking it or cutting it by other means than that supplied by myinvention, and at the same time having an even and clean end of the thread which he desires to pass through the needle.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim is As an improvement in combined spoolholders and thread-cutters, the combination, with a horizontal base-plate provided with spindles secured thereto and with a clamp, of a folding cutting-blade hinged to one end of said base-plate and adapted when opened to occupy a vertical position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
