Description

(No Model.)
H. H. SIEVERT. WATER CLOSET SEAT AND COVER.
No. 480,292. Patented Aug. 9', 1892.
%i77esses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. SIEVERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE L. WVOLFF MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WATER-CLOSET SEAT AND COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,292, dated August 9, 1892.
Application filed February 15, 1892. Serial No. 421,492. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. SIEVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closet Seats and Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinged seats and covers for water-closets.
My invention consists in a water-closet seat and cover hinged on the same pivot or center.
It further consists, in connection with the two lids, the seat, and cover, of a split hinge one strap of which is secured to one lid and the other strap to the other lid.
It further consists in a hinge with three straps and a common pivot.
It further consists in a split hinge having one strap fitting on and secured to the upper side of the seat and another strap fitting on and secured to the under side of the cover.
It further consists in the novel devices and novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout all the figures, Figure 1 is a plan View of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the split hinge.
In the drawings, A represents the stationary part or framework of a water-closet, B the seat, and C the cover. The two lids B and C are hinged to the stationary portion or frame A on a common pivot or center I).
D is the split hinge, having three hinged straps d, d, and d pivoted together by the common pivot-pin b. The hinge-strap d is secured to the stationary part or frame A of the water-closet. The strap d fits on the upper face of the seat B and is secured thereto, while the strap (1 fits on the under face of the cover C and is secured thereto by woodscrews (1 the heads of which fit in countersunk holes formed in the outer face of the strap (1 The straps d and d are each provided with threaded bosses d on the under sides, which fit in suitable conntersinks formed in the seat B and frame A. These straps are secured in place by screws or threaded bolts d which are inserted from below and enter the threaded bosses d on the straps d d.
I do not herein claim the hinged straps furnished with these threaded bosses on the under side and secured in place by screws inserted from below, as this is not my invention, but the invention, as I am informed and believe, of John Clifford, who has filed an application thereon of even date herewith.
I claim- 1. The combination, with the frame A, of hinge-lids B C turning on a common center, and a split hinge having one strap secured to said stationary part A, a strap cl, fitting on and secured to the upper side of said seat B, and a strap d fitting on and secured to the under side of said cover C, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the frame A, of hinge-lids B C, turning on a common center, and a split hinge having one strap secured to said stationary part A, a strap d, fitting on and secured to the upperside of said seat B, and a strap (1 fitting on and secured to the under side of said cover 0, said straps d and d being secured in place by metal screws inserted from below and entering threaded holes or bosses on the under side of said straps d d and said strap 01 being secured to said cover C by wood -screws, substantially as specified.
3. The split hinge comprising straps d, d, and d and a common pivot b, pivoting said straps together, substantially as specified.
