The train of gearing will provide sufficient friction to prevent any backward turning of the toothed Wheel E at the end of the fluted shaft or roller. Nevertheless, the adding- Wheels may be readily moved whenever it is desired to reduce the set to 0that is to say, to bring all said wheels into position with their O-marks in the reading position. In preparing for this reduction the angular bailframe K, which carries the carrying-pinions, is turned backward, disengaging these pinions and bringing the stop bail-bar K against the peripheries of the adding-wheels in position to engage their stop-pins 70, which serve to stop their movements when their O-marks are brought to the reading position. The stop-bail branch of the angular frame is then moved away from the adding-wheels, and this action brings the carrying-pinions to their position of engagement with said wheels.
This adding mechanism is of compact character and may be readily employed in connection with indicating or display apparatus and key-regulating devices of various kinds.
I have illustrated indicating values at I and key-regulating devices at J and V; but as these form separate inventions, for which I have made other applications for patents,it is unnecessary to enter into any detailed explanation of the same in this specification.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, 1s-
1. In a cash-register and accounting-machine, the combination, with the key-levers and their are racks having, respectively, teeth corresponding in number to the required action of the key and the fluted shaft or roller operated upon by said teeth and having thereon a loose toothed wheel connected thereto by a pawl and ratchet so arranged that said wheel is carried with the shaft during the forward movement of the latter, but is held stationary during its backward movement, of the series of adding-wheels arranged upon ashaft parallel with said fluted roll and alongside thereof, the pinion thereon, the carrying devices, and the idler-wheels for transmitting the movement of said shaft to the adding-wh eel shaft, substantially as specified.
2. In a cash-register and accounting-machine havinga fluted shaft or roll acted upon by an arc rack on the key-levers and carrying a pinion loosely thereon and connected thereto by a pawl-and-ratchet device so arranged that said wheel is revolved with the shaft during its forward movement, but permits the shaft to turn loosely thereon duringits backward movement, the combination therewith of the adding-wheels arranged side by side upon a shaft and alongside thereof parallel with said fluted shaft, the idler-wheels in gear with said loose wheel and with the pinion of the first adding-wheel, and the series of carrying-pinions for the adding-wheels, said pinions being journaled on a movable frame, substantially as specified.
