HANDLE FOR WASH-BOILERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,588, dated July 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES I; FLANAGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handles for ash-Boilers, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a handle formed of a non-heat-conducting gripsuch as woodwhich is connected to supporting ears by means of a rod passed through the handle and ears and having its ends bent over and embracing said ears and fixed thereto.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a handle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line a: m, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a wooden handle or grip, whose ends are fitted in sockets G of metallic ears B, the latter being adapted to be riveted or otherwise firmly secured to a wash-boiler, &c.

In the socket G and the handle Aare openings, through which is passed the rod D, whose ends extend outside of said sockets and are bent down or upon the sides of the ears, as limbs E, which embrace the exterior of the sockets, and along the sides of the ears and adjacent portions of the ears and are soldered thereto, thereby acting as a reinforce for the said sides of the ears when made of open-work or of lightness in weight.

It is well known that handles of wash-boiL ers and similar vessels are subjected to harsh usage and severe strain, whereby the handle A proper is liable to be wrenched from the ears, or vice versa; but in consequence of the limbs E the connection of the rod with the ears is braced and said limbs, owing to their angular form, cannot be drawn through the sockets, and thus the handle A and ears are held together in a firm and durable manner and remain intact. By having the limbs E extending along the ear, as shown, a sufficient area of the same is furnished for securely and reliably securing them to the said car, while by bending them against the cars, so as to firmly embrace the latter, additional firmness is given to the connection of said rod and ears, and the limbs may be secured to the ears instead of terminating on the ears adjacent to the ends of the wooden handle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A handle for a wash-boiler, consisting of cars with sockets at their ends and adapted to be secured to said boiler, a grip with its ends fitting in said sockets, and arod extending through openings in the said grip and sockets and having angular limbs at its ends outside of said sockets extending over the ears and embracing the same and are fixed thereto, substantially as described.

2. A handle for a boiler, consisting of metallic ears formed of open sides having sockets at their ends, a hollow wooden grip with its ends fitting in said sockets, and a rod passing through said grip and sockets and having limbs at its ends extending along the open sides and rigidly secured thereto, said parts being combined substantially as described.
