FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,448, dated July 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I,.WILLIAM W. MOKAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dickinson,-in the county of Stark and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to fire-extinguishers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the ap-' pended claim.

In the West it is the general custom when the prairies are on fire and property is in danger of being destroyed to form an extinguisher of the hide of one or more cattle. The cattle are slaughtered by the farmers and the hides removed, leaving as much meat on the hides as possible. Two long wires or ropes are then secured at one end to the hides and their opposite ends attached to the pommels of saddles that have been placed on horses. The horses are then made to drag the hides along and smother the fire. This manner of fighting prairie fires is' very good and eifecttnal; but the hides, owing to the intense heat, soon become dried and charred and have to be renewed, besides the time and labor expended in slaughtering the cattle to use their hides for fighting fire is very expensive.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, novel, and inexpensive fire extinguisher or metallic blanket composed of a number of sheets or plates of metal secured together by solid and split rings. The object in forming the blanket in small sections is to allow the blanket to readily accommodate itself to uneven ground. Further, it may be readily folded up and stored away or may be easily carried.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A designates my improved blanket composed of a number of sheets or plates of any desired metal, said plates being provided in each corner with elongated slots B, in which are secured rings b, united together by means of loops or split rings 0. The object in making the slots elongated is to allow the rings 1) to assume the position shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, which allows the blanket to lie close to the ground and more effectually smother the fire.

To prevent the sheet or plates from buckling, the edges of the same are bent back upon themselves, as shown, forming a rib D.

E E designate chains secured to one end of the blanket and provided at their ends with hooks or eyes, to which are attached wires or ropes for dragging the blanket along the ground.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The improved fire-extinguishing blanket herein described, consisting of a plurality of metallic plates arranged in parallel series, the plates of each being connected together by rings joining the adjacent corners and hav ing loose play in elongated slots therein, and loops connecting each two adjacent rings to form the blanket, as set forth.
