Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH TILDEN, a citi: zen of the United States, residing at Johannesburg, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to horse cover supports and more particularly to a support carried by the shaft for the same; the object being to provide the shafts of a buggy or wagon with a frame adapted to fit over the horse and under its belly, so that a rubber, canvas or net work covering can be readily secured over the same so as to protect the horse from sun, rain snow and insects.

Another object of my invention is to provide the fastening bolts with hooks so that the covering can be readily secured therein without any danger of itcoming off.

Another object of my invention is to provide the hood of the frame with a hinge-joint so that it can be readily folded back when desired.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horse and a portion of the shafts showing my improved cover support attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the shafts showing the manner of securing the frame to the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the snap hook and a portion of the frame showing the manner of securing the frame together at the front. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the frame showing the hingejoint of the hood. Fig. 5 is a section taken on lines 55 of Fig. 4.

In the drawings A indicates an ordinary pair of shafts, to which my improved cover support is adapted to be secured. The supports consists of the upper frame 0 adapted to extend over the back of the horse, the hood frame D adapted to fit over the head of the horse and the lower frame E adapted to fit under the belly of the horse.

The upper frame C is formed of a series of bowed strips C having angled apertured ends G which are secured to the top of the shaft by eye-bolts F. A bowed strip 0 is riveted to the strip G adjacent their ends being provided with a loop G at one end, and the other end with a snap-hook H, for connecting the ends together. The ends of a bowed strip C are riveted to the strap 0 adjacent the ends having a strip C connected centrally to the same, extending backwardly over the strips 0 and riveted thereto, the endof the strip being riveted to the strip C midway of its length. A bowed strip C having its ends riveted to the stri G extends around the strip C and strip 5 and is riveted to the end strip when it crosses the same. Riveted to this strip is a bowed strip C having its ends connected to the strip C The hood D consists of the bowed strips D, D D having the ends connected to a hinged plate D by rivets, which are hinged to plates D riveted to the bowed strip 0 These strips are connected together centrally by a strip D. A bowed strip D is riveted to the strip C to which is secured a flexible cable I) one end of which is secured to the strip D and the other to the strip C so that the hood can be swung back off the head when desired.

The lower frame E consists of bowed strips E, having angled apertured ends which are secured on the end of the forward bolts F by hook-nuts F, and has riveted centrally thereto a strip E provided with back-strips E having angled apertured ends which are secured on the rear bolts F by nuts F.

The strip E and back-strip E, are connected together by strips E adjacent their ends which carry a bowed strip E which is riveted to the strip E It will be readily seen that this frame can be readily attached after the horse has been harnessed. The

covering I to be used will be provided with hooks 1 adapted to fit in the eye-bolt and hook-nut so that they can be easily and' ried by said shafts and a cover adapted to be secured to said hooks for the purpose described.

2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of shafts, of a series of bowed strips provided with outwardly projecting apertured ends secured on'the top of the shafts by eye bolts, a bowed strip connecting the first mentioned bowed strips adjacent their ends and a loop secured to one end of said bowed strip and a hook to the other end of said strip, for the purpose described.

3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a pair of shafts, of a plurality of bowed strips connected to the upper side of said shafts forming a frame, a hood pivotally connected to said frame, said hood eing supported by a flexible cable, and bowed strips secured to the under side of said shaft forming a frame, and a cover adapted to fit over and below the upper and lower frames and over the hood.

4. A horse cover of the kind described comprising" a frame adapted to be secured on strips, carried by a plate, said plate being pivotally connected to a plate carried by the 111st mentioned frame, a cover arranged over said frame, a flexible cable connecting the bowed strips of said hood to the first men tioned frame, for the purpose set forth.
