ELECTRIC ALARM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,282, dated July 19, 1892. Application filed May 26, 1892. Serial No. 4341484. (No model.)

To all whom, t may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT LowRY KEITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Electric Appliances for the Shelves, Cases, and Cabinets of Drug-Stores; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an electrical appliance for the shelves, cases, and cabinets of drug-stores; and its object is to prevent the dealing out of poisonous drugs by mistakein compounding of prescriptions, &c. For this purpose it consists of the device and combination of devices hereinafter described and particularly claimed.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a top plan view of the entire arrangement applied to a row of bottles on a shelf in a drug-store in connection with an electric alarm; Fig. 2, a bottom plan of the invention with bottles removed, showing ends of connecting-wire; and Fig. 3, a cross-section of line c of Fig. l.

Referring to the drawings, A is a shelf, and B is a row of bottles thereon supposed to contain drugs of poisonous nature.

F is a rod, wire, or plate secured to brackets t' on the under side of the shelf, with one end thereof electrically connected to an alarmbell G. To the rod F is rigidly secured a series of spring-levers D, and each spring-lever provided at a point near its center with a pin or projection C, extending up through the shelf and a fraction of an inch above it and on which projections the bottles are designed to set..

H is a battery, from which a wire I leads to a bell G, and from which also runs an opposite wire K in a line parallel with the rod F adjacent thereto, with its outer ends secured to brackets t' on the under side of the shelf and within reach of the levers D. The levers D are adapted to open and close the circuit formed by the battery, the wires I K, the metal lever-support F, and the alarm-bell. lVhen the bottles are resting on pins C of levers D, the levers are forced away by the weight of the bottles from wire K and the circuit is broken. IVhen a bottle is removed, the outer end of a leverD springs up against wire K, and the circuit is closed from the battery through wire K, rod F, bell G, and wire I and the alarm sounded.

I-Iaving` described my invention, what I claim is- In an electric alarm for the detection of poisons, the combination, in a circuit, of a battery, an alarm, and a wire connecting the battery and alarm with a shelf, a metal rod constituting part of the circuit and carrying one or more spring-levers, each lever provided with a projection extending,` through said shelf, and one or more bottles, each adapted to rest upon one of said projections, whereby on the removal of a bottle from one of the said projections the circuit is closed by the action of said lever and the alarm sounded` substantially as and for the purpose described.
