EAR-MUFF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,185, dated July 19, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beitknown that I, HARVEY HADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the village of Peekskill, in the county of estchester and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Ear-Muffler, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to coverings for the ear, and has for its object the attachment to IO a hat or cap of a muff that may be easily and quickly caused to cover the ear and instantaneously be made to fold within the hat. These objects are attained by the means set forth in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I represents a muff complete. Fig. II represents a hat in cross-section, showing the operation of the muff. Fig. III shows how the muff is attached to the rim of a hat.

In construction a metallic piece at, having the round stem 1) and the flattened ends 0 c, bent at right angles to the said stem, constitutes the hanger for the muff. A wire loop (I, having its ends bent into spirals e e, is covcred with the Inuff fabric f, and the spirals are slipped on the stem 1), with their ends fastened to the stem, as shown at g, the wire having a spring-temper. The spirals of course tend to hold the Inulfsin one direction. The

hanger a is fastened to the hat-rim just on the edge of the crown, as shown in Fig. II, and the spirals are so adjusted as to throw the muff inside the crown, as shown at h, Fig. II. Fig. III illustrates how the points a c of 5 the hanger are passed through the hat-rim 7t, and,heingbent down,as shown,securelyhold the spiral in a properposition. t', Fig. II, shows the muff in position for covering the ear.

The casual observer will notnotice that a hat is provided with this muff, as the hanger can be made inconspicuous and the wire loop so slender that it will not only be out of sight, but the wearer of the hat will experience no inconvenience from it. When the wearer wishes to use the muffs, it is the work of a moment to lift the hat, turn the muffs ontward from inside the crown, holding them so until the hat is replaced on the head, when as soon as the hands are removed from them they will comfortably cover the ears. Simply lifting the hat from the head causes the muffs to return to the inside of the hat. Thus the muffs are always ready, never in the way, and cannot be laid down and forgotten or left in a pocket at home or at the office.

I do not wish to be limited in making the muff to the exact form as herein shown so long as I embody the principles of my invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is

An ear-muff comprising a wire frame, a covering therefor, and a hanger for securing said frame to a hat, the wire frame terminatingin spirals wound around the shank of the hanger, substantially as herein set forth.
