UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. THOMPSON, OF OYRUS, MINNESOTA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,034, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed April 15, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cyrus, in the county of Pope and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Draft- Equalizer, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in draft-equalizers; and
.it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth wherein the parts are simple and effective in their construction and operation, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive in manufacture.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved form of equalizer. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line at 00, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the pole or beam, which is of any preferred form of construction and has extending outwardly therefrom a supplemental draft-bar 2, having an inner yoked or bifurcated end embracing the upper and lower sides of the pole 1 and secured to the same by a bolt 3. To the outer end of the bar 2 is eccentrically secured a beam 4, to the inner end of which is attached a singletree 5, and to the outer end of the same is secured a doubletree 6. To the pole 1 is pivotally secured a lever 7, having a greater portion thereof extending over and beyond one side of the pole, the said lover being confined in position by a clip 8, carrying a bolt 9 in the Serial No. 429,357. (No model.)
pivotally connected, as set forth, and through the connection of the said parts with the pole 1 through the lever 7 and bar 2 a double attachment of the device entire is provided on two pointsof the pole, which are separate from each other. A singletree 13 is connected to the lever 12 and bars 11, and the draft exerted on the beam 4 through the single and,
double trees is transmitted through the bar 2 and the connecting-bars 10 to the pole, and the force applied is equalized through the singletree 13, so that an equality of drawing action or equilibrium will be at all times sustained. The power exerted on the beam 4is three times as great as that exerted on the lever 12; but the parts are so arranged that the force is equalized throughout the entire structure.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a draft-equalizer, the combination of the pole, a supplemental beam extending outwardly from and terminating at its inner end at the pole and having a beam eccentrically connected to the outer portion thereof and carrying a singletree at the inner end thereof and a doubletree at the outer end of the same, a pair of connecting-bars, attached at their forward ends to the outer end of the beam, secured to the supplemental beam, all of said parts being arranged on one side of the pole, a lever'eccentrically mounted on the pole in rear of the supplemental beam, to one end of which the rear portion of said connecting-bars are attached, said lever being confined in position by a clip, a pair of connecting-bars extending from the opposite side of said lever, a lever carried by the bolt of the said supplemental beam independent of and extending outward in line with said supplemental beam, on the outward end of which the last-named connecting-bars are secured, and a singletree JOHN s. THOMPSON.
Witnesses:
HARRY CHRISTOPHER, O. J. HoLDEN.
